(AGG) In the book Under the Persimmon Tree there are two characters that suffer from PTSD, the author uses them to tell people about PTSD and what happens to people who suffer from it. (SIP-A) In the real world many people see their loved ones get taken and get hurt. (SREWE-1) In chapter one Najmah’s brother and father get kidnapped by the taliban. When they do take away nur and baba-jan it affects Najmah’s mother more than Najmah. “The Pashtun talib mutters something, and the men shove and drag baba-jan and my brother toward the Datsun pickup trucks. … I hear the pickup trucks leave, but I am struggling with mada-jan and cannot see them” (Staples 18). (STEWE-2) In this quote Najmah’s father and brother get taken away. And Najmah’s mother is crying and trying to go after them. Najmah had no idea that the taliban would come and take Baba-jan and her brother. During when they were ransacking her home and kidnapping baba-jan and nur she and her mother couldn't do anything or the taliban would hurt them. (SIP-A) Najmah shows the effects of PTSD after the death of her mother and brother. (STEWE-1) When Najmah’s mother and brother die she stops talking for a long time. “I sit in the dirt beside them quietly, not crying, not thinking, not even aware that I am breathing. … She does not try to talk to me, and I am grateful. What can any one say to me now?” (Staples 83). Najmah goes silent for most of the book. This is a sign of PTSD. (STEWE-2) Later in chapter seven Najmah can't go to sleep because she will see her mother and brother. “I am afraid if i close my eyes I’ll see my mother’s outstretched arm and the stain of blood spreading around her and habib's perfect small body, both of them still covered with dust” (Staples 86). Najmah is too scared to sleep because she might see her mother and brother. Seeking flashbacks is usually a sign of PTSD. (SIP-B) After the death of Nusrat’s sister she showed signs of PTSD. (STEWE-1) After Nusrat's sister died Nusrat didn't want to accept the fact that she was gone, and she would not make any friends. “Her mother tried to tell her that Margaret was gone and that she would have to learn to do things with other people.
