Has there ever been a time in your life where you or your family was struggling to survive on a day to day basis? There was someone who seen that and wrote about it. Upton Sinclair wrote “The Jungle” in response to the reform the social working class needed during the beginning of the Twentieth Century. “The Jungle” starts with the introduction of Jurgis Rudkus who is getting married to his young fiance Ona Lukoszaite. The two are having their wedding in packingtown, which is Chicago’s meatpacking district. Jurgis and his family of twelve are from a small town in Lithuania. Jurgis hears from Ona’s step uncle that he has a friend in Chicago that is rich, this makes them decide to move down to Chicago. Jurgis and some of the family due eventually get jobs so the can put the money up to get a house so they can get out of their sorry living conditions. After the family saved up enough money to afford a house they find that it is not so easy to keep either. This is around the time that Jurgis and Ona get married because they believe they can persist and push forward as a family. The family later finds out how hard it is when winter comes and factories close down on top of Jurgis getting hurt and Ona getting pregnant. More of the family ends up having to work and when summer rolls back around Ona has already had the baby and is back to work. Later on in the book everyone finds that Ona is acting strange and she's not coming home all the time. Jurgis later finds out that Ona has been raped and is pregnant again by her boss. Jurgis ends up in jail for attacking her boss who raped her. Ona and the baby later on die which causes Jurgis to go to drinking in which he promises the family that he’ll sober up and take care of them but then he loses his son because no one is watching him and he drowns.
