In “Violent Media is Good for Kids” Gerard Jones persuades concerned parents that violent media is more beneficial than harmful by appealing emotionally to them through a story about his childhood, establishing his authority, citing a trusted source, using empowering diction, and sharing a story about his son. The first paragraph begins with, “At 13 I was alone and afraid.” This creates pity for Jones. Concerned parents read this sentence and are persuaded to believe that savage comics will allow their son or daughter to grow into a seat of power because reading them allows their child to be strong and with this, the child will face the world with a courageous and optimistic attitude due to the mental preparation they have received from their super hero friends. Jones shares a personal anecdote in paragraph six when he mentions his son being afraid to climb trees with the other boys in his first-grade class. In response, Jones read old Tarzan comics to his son for two weeks and created desire deep within him to do as Tarzan did, and his son did climb the trees.
