Nehru said, “facts are facts and will not disappear on account of your likes.” The book, Voices from the Fields written by Beth Atkins in the early 1990s shows some issues that children of migrant farm workers face in their day-to-day lives. The book is essential because it shows the reality of the children’s lives in the farm and the problems that these children faced, hence moving a lot, really poor living housing conditions, and joining a gang. Children of undocumented workers in the USA have many problems and one of them includes having to move all the time. One way in which this problem impacts children of undocumented workers is that they must move continuously all year round. One way this issue affects children is they end up leaving school and joining a team of gangsters. “After attending several new schools, Rang Rosa joined a Surenos gang” (Atkin, 57). Rosas was moving from school to school and he ended up attending Gonzales High school. He started hanging out with some classmates. They spent time together and helped each other with homework. But after a while, some groups of gangs began fighting with him so then they formed a gang. Another way this issue affects children of undocumented workers is that they are peer pressured into taking drugs. “Rosas said, he was hanging out with this group of friends to relieve himself from the pain he had” (Atkin, 59). His family had a problem because his dad was with another woman. He looked for friends to talk to and he trusted one friend in this group. One more way this problem affects children of undocumented workers is they end up fighting and killing other individuals. “A gang in Salinas shot a guy when he walked by” (Atkin, 60). As a result, lives are lost tragically. Rosas is in big trouble because leaving the gang is more difficult than joining. Children of migrant farmworkers have to move frequently. For instance, since Julisa was little, she has moved many times over the course of a year. Consequently, this causes children to never enroll in school or they end up dropping out of school. Children of undocumented workers in the USA have problems with housing. People like Manuel, live with eight other individuals in one bedroom. The living conditions of these homes are unhealthy and unfit for human life. Children of undocumented workers in the USA also face problems involving gangs. As Rosas dropped out of school and joined a gang his life turned upside down. His life was in danger as he didn’t know what to do because leaving the gang is harder than joining the gang. Children of migrants should learn lessons from Rosa’s mistake and they should continue going to school no matter what. If every migrant child went to school, he, or she would have a brighter future. Do you think it is right to cross the border illegally with children?
