The book Wheelchair Warrior Gangs, Disability, and Basketball by Melvin Juette and Ronald J. Berger was an inspirational story of Melvin Juette’s life. Juette was an African American raised in Chicago with his mom, dad, and two brothers, Torries (also known as Opie) and Maurice. As Juette grew up, gang activity divided his home and pulled him along with all of his friends and family into its drama. Juette became part of a confederation of gangs known as the People Nation which rivaled another group of gangs known as the Folks Nation. People from opposing gangs were extremely violent towards each other and often got into fights and beat each other up. A few gang members carried guns but they were not widely used.
