Summer informs his readers about plastic bags and their effects on the environment with large amounts of credibility. Citing several major sources and individuals, Summer appears extremely knowledgeable about this topic. He states, “according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, plastic bags, sacks, and wraps of all kinds (not just grocery bags) make up only about 1.6 percent of all municipal solid waste materials”. Throughout his argument, Summer clearly demonstrates his opinions that plastic bags do not harm the environment near as much as reusable bags do. Attempting to persuade his readers to think the same, he creates a tone of credibility as he cites numerous credible sources.
Luz Bernardo Prof. Gregory Nault English 102 March 14, 2024 Summary and Analysis The article that I summarized is called Tara Brock's article, "California Tackles Plastic Pollution at the Source," written by Tara Brock. It is an "abridged and edited version of one that originally appeared on page 1 of Trends, May/ June 2023 (54:5). " The article addresses the pressing issue of plastic pollution and explores California's legislative initiatives to combat it. In a world increasingly plagued by plastic waste, Brock's article provides timely insights into the challenges posed by plastic pollution and the effectiveness of policy interventions in addressing this environmental crisis.
“Despite China's restrictions, U.S. plastics recycling continued to grow in 2013, with plastic bottle recycling up by 4.3% over 2012,19 and polyethylene film recycling up by 11%.20 Recycling of non-bottle rigid materials (e.g., yogurt tubs, clamshell containers) declined by just under 1% in 2013 but overall has tripled since 2007 to more than 1 billion pounds per year as more communities have added non-bottle rigid containers to their collection programs.” The author has obviously been putting good research toward this topic before, or during the writing of this article. All the information is present, but the presentation is still not emotional, and in few ways remotely attaching to the reader. All the facts are there, just not the connection that makes people want to read it. I find it as the difference between reading a chart, and reading a note, one is meant to speak to a person, and the other is intended to represent
For example, we drink from it, eat from it. People from all walks of life depend on plastic so much as it is a cheap and convenient product. However, people do not know where do the plastic finally throw away. With highly consumption of plastic, it raises up various questions as mentioned above. In this documentary, Angela Sun would like to lead us to find out the answers of these thesis.
In an article in "Food Matters" called "Grocery Stores Are Packed with Plastic." Some Are Changing" by Alejandra Borunda, the harmful effects of plastic packaging in grocery stores are highlighted as a global problem that has significant effects on the planet. While plastics are widely used, they are mostly known for their negative impacts. As experts always say, finding environmentally friendly packaging options is crucial for reducing the impact that products and their packaging have on our environment. Understanding how our decisions and the environment interact in different ways, shows the need for making better decisions and having enough knowledge of the plastic packaging life cycle, from production to disposal.
Opponents claim that landfilling is one of the most widely used method for the disposal of e-waste rather than recycling. In the US, an estimated 70% of heavy metal in landfills come from discarded electronics. In this technique, soil is evacuated from the trenches that are made on flat surfaces and waste materials are buried into it, which is covered by a thick layer of soil. Modern technologies has created an updated, secure landfills with various facilities like impervious liner made of plastic or clay, leachate collection basin that collects and transfer the leachate to water treatment plants, etc. However, such an argument completely ignores the fact that the disposal of e-waste into the landfills leads to various heath issues.
If you are like me, in your twenties, always falling for the latest models or trends, but never thinking about purchases or garbage - this book will change the way you think about how much waste we actually produce on a daily basis, specifically plastic waste. Freinkel notes that the world consumes over 600 billion pounds of plastic annually today (pg. 14). As a science writer and graduate of Wesleyan University and Columbia University Graduate School, Freinkel is aware of the growing recycling problem of our world. One day she decided she was going to go an entire day without touching any plastic. That was quickly changed within the first 30 seconds when she needed to use the restroom.
“Ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country” JFK said in a speech . What I would do for the USA, is to help the environment by picking up trash and other items. Here are some more examples, saving water and electricity are the biggest problems. We can also clean up the parks and streets. So to do it, we could have signs to tell people to take care of the earth by recycling.
Due to the negative effects caused from plastic it will always play a role in our environment. One hundred different chemicals have been created after the 1950s to the current day. Something people do not realize is that throwing a plastic wrapper on the ground will end up in a birds stomach, burning plastic in a fire will end up in the air we breathe, and recycling plastic will end up back in our homes. The author states, “I don’t even shop anymore. Anything I need will just float
Imagine living in a world where the air is polluted and most people are afraid to step outside their front door, in the near future, this may be reality for Americans. Americans throw out over 200 million tons of garbage a year, yet recycle not nearly as much. Most people do not realize it but recycling is a vital part of America’s society and if Americans do not perform this action, it will backfire on them. People in America are debating whether Americans are recycling enough and correctly. After analyzing the data, one will definitely agree that Americans need to be more educated on recycling due to the fact that most people do not know what happens after they recycle an item, nearly all Americans are recycling incorrectly, and Am To begin,
This project was chosen because of the severity of the issue at hand. There are many environmental and sustainability concerns with this topic but this journey of inquiry has been narrowed down to cover plastic. As the Australian population grows and more shopping centres are being built to comply with the need of consumers, so is the need for plastic bags. More than 100,000 animals die every year after ingesting or becoming entangled in them ("Say 'NO ' to plastic bags!", 2016). In the Ocean crusaders article about plastic statistics (2012), it states that Australia uses 6.9 billion plastic bags a year which turns out to be 36,700 tonnes of plastic that ends up in landfill and only 10% of Australians recycle them.
Imagine what happens if we keep on polluting our planet? What happens to our future generation? Since plastic takes years to biodegrade, if we keep polluting our environment with plastic, then our future generation will suffer from the environment around them. It also means that plastic and other trash will continue polluting the ocean, which can cause thousands of sea animals to go extinct, providing us with less source of food. Not only sea animals, but animals all over the world might extinct or become endangered because of pollution.
Everyday people buy plastic things from the cafeteria, from plastic containers, lids on cups, and things as small as straws, and like 50% of plastic used it will be thrown away after one use. However, do you ever stop and think, what happens to the plastic? If you’re thinking that it just magically goes away you 're wrong. It will most likely end up in a landfill somewhere or in the ocean, and as you may think that your actions do not impact the world, think again. Everyone in the world has at least used one piece of plastic, adding to the problem of plastic pollution and helping certifying the terrifying statisticc that acooording to the 2018 Earth day video, “by 2050 there will more plastic in the ocean than fish”, which almost is impossible to think of.
Recycling reduces the need for raw materials so that the rainforests can be preserved. It has helped in multiple ways, like bringing companies to use more recyclable materials in the products they make, thus making less trash in the landfills. Recycling is an important necessity because of the overgrowing waste, but the benefits will definitely outweigh the consequences of not doing it. Most people who burn their plastic domestic waste do not realize how harmful this practice is to their health and to the environment.
The reason plastic is used in many products is because it can withstand up to tons of pressure per cm3, is cheap, is durable, and finally, there is no worry for discoloring. But these days, plastic is becoming a major problem the world has to deal with. Plastic is thrown into the ocean, and it is breaking down into very small pieces, and killing marine life, as they mistake those pieces to their prey. As a matter of fact, nearly all plastics are recyclable, but it 's the recycling companies ' machines that refuse to recycle that kind of plastic(eartheasy.com). I. Plastic, what have you done?
