The book With Every Drop Of Blood by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier is about the Civil War in 1861. The story begins with a 14 year old boy named Johnny. He tells us that his pa went off to war and how he and his mom and sisters had to do all the work in the house. During this time, his family was going poor. To earn money, he had to teamster with his wagon. After getting shot, Johnny’s dad returned home. He was in very critical condition and could only do simple tasks to help around the house. Pa takes this time to teach Johnny about the war and how to be the man of the house. Pa seemed to be getting better, until he died. Johnny tries to ignore him by reading the Bible. When Cush sees this, he tells Johnny that someday he will learn to read. He thought for a minute and realized that he could use Johnny to teach him. Cush then decides to ask him to teach him. Johnny agrees seeing that if he can get friendly with the soldier, he would be able to escape. So, he secretly teaches him wrong as he thinks a black person should not know how to read. Cush starts to ask Johnny about the Gettysburg Address. On it, there was a section about Abraham Lincoln which states that all men are equal. After the attack, Jeb dies. Before he died, he asked to bury him with rocks on top. Johnny agrees, but also sees this as an opportunity to escape. He asks two of the soldiers if he is able to bury his friend. After bickering with eachother, the two soldiers agree to let him go. Once he does, the soldiers notice that Johnny was going very far. The soldiers alert everyone and start chasing him down. He came clean knowing that if he fussed about it, he would get shot right then and there. Cush is notified and knows that Johnny was trying to escape. Johnny refuses but Cush knows that he was bluffing. The next day, Cush introduces Johnny to Captain Barlett. Captain Barlett wants to take Johnny to a prison camp as he sees no use for him. He also does this because he thinks that he’s a spy. Cush convinces him not to, though, because he
