One of the plays held in the Center theatre group was Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez. Zoot Suit is inspired by the Zoot Suit Riot taken place in Los Angeles and in some other cities. Zoot Suit is a musical play based by the sleepy Lagoon murder, where a man named José Gallardo Díaz died a mystery. Law enforcement began to arrest Mexican-American without having inadequate evidence that they were involve with the murder of Diaz. The play was also based on the suit suit riots. Police men arrested and attacked civilians who wore zoot suits. Seemingly policemen considered the outfits to be unpatriotic. During the wartime in 1943 fabric was needed in war world II. Fabric had to be limited due to the war, although young Mexican American were being attacked for wearing zoot suits, Young Filipinos and young African Americans were being attacked for wearing zoot suits. …show more content…
The 38TH Street Gang got into a fight, in which a young man gets murdered. The 38th Street Gang wore zoot suit; they were being discriminated for what they were wearing. Around 20 members in the gang were placed in trail for the murder. The play demonstrates Henry brother being beat and unvarnished of his zoot suit. “They play emergence of a Chicano identify from a history of discrimination and oppression” (Aaron). What is amazing about this play is that it validates on political and historical events that the audience can have knowledge and a perspective of how people were treated. The play uses Chicano culture. A zoot suit is high waisted zoot suits. The characters in the play were mainly focused on Henry Reyna his family, George Shearer who is a Lawyer and Alice Bloomfield who is an active, a secretary of the defense committee and who Henry Reyna has a romance with.
