Truly hard-working people are often difficult to find among the millions of other straws in the haystack of “fitting” political candidates; however, this little known observation is not solely contained in a position of political authority, as it is also true amongst even the smallest of society’s social groups. The needles of such a haystack typically work themselves into a position of power that gives them influence over the mind of the majority by doing as they feel is right and following the path that fate lay ahead of them. Without a shadow of a doubt, his mentality and dedication were the most important values of his presidency. One experience in his autobiography particularly interested me as it went against the opinion of the majority for what President Coolidge felt was the best decision to make in response to the situation that was handed to him. The instance I speak of is the Boston Police Strike of 1919 during which time President Coolidge was Governor Calvin Coolidge of Massachusetts. Using his position of power and his idea of what is right and what is wrong, he wholeheartedly made the decision to reinstate Commissioner Edwin U. Curtis to his position as commissioner instead of allowing the police officers who went on strike to keep their jobs. With this decision he made the statement, “There is no right to strike against the public safety by any body, any time, any where” (Coolidge 134). Though these values should be implemented with a deeper regard for their ultimate purpose of honoring the Constitution of the United States, many people have shied away from such principles. The result is a growing concern for our government and its policies. Although people continue to work hard, more people are becoming dependent on welfare, more people are allowing the government to take care of them and their families, and less people are deciding to take a stand for their beliefs. The result of such actions is a national debt of about 20 trillion dollars. Never in a million years would President Calvin Coolidge have thought that the great United States of America would allow themselves to rely so heavily on other countries; however, I must believe that the upcoming generation of citizens will be able to do what is right and steer our country back to the
