The life pursued by the average young person in America is fast paced and scheduled to the point of breaking. As time has progressed this time stretched life style has impacted the need for food that isn’t cooked at home or even at restaurants that cook with traditional methods. This coupled with the swelling number of households with either a single parent or two working parents has increased the reliance on the fast food industry and in turn increased the overweight and obesity rates in the country. In his article “Don’t Blame the Eater,” David Zinczenko addresses this topic and places the blame not on those partaking in these delectable dinners, but in the hands of the fast food industry and their lack of understandable labeling. Zinczenko’s argument is valid and strong due to his equal use of ethos, logos and pathos.
After watching this video where Michael Moss speaks about Salt, Sugar, and Fat in the American diet, my views about the food industry have changed. I never realized that the government was supporting the dairy industry. It amazed me to learn that the reason Americans are so attached to their dairy products is due to the strong relationship of the government and the dairy industry. Personally, I really enjoy dairy products.
In agreement with said statistics, Michael Pollan states, “People eating a western diet are prone to a complex of chronic diseases that seldom strike people eating more traditional diets.” (421). In other words, consumers who take part of the western diet can, and most likely will, contract a chronic disease compared to those who choose the healthier or more traditional styles of eating. Who would’ve thought that something so insignificant as a single hamburger or large sized fountain drink could be so harmful? Well, it turns out that these items can be very much so.
Within the movie In Defense of Food, Michael Pollan attempts to tackle the question of what we “should” eat. As simple as he can, Pollan examines that question in depth, trying to push through the supermarket, good industry, diet industry, and another place people go to find and choose the food they eat. I wouldn't say its a guide on specific foods that will increase your health but more towards the line of philosophic view on what “food” has become in the united states and also comparing it to other countries around the world. Pollan feels that us complicating the food around us is not benefiting us, but hurting us. When I say complicated food I'm referring to the center of grocery stores with the all processed food or diet “healthy” food.
Pollan (2015), he claims that the only way to avoid the health problems caused by the Western diet is to stop overindulging and to fill a diet with healthy options. He believes that we need to find a way to avoid the worst parts of the diet, without having to completely resort back to the dietary habits of our ancestors. Pollan discusses three different steps that can help improve the Western diet. First is to eat food for survival not to overindulge. Next, Pollan advises individuals to eat enough food, but not too much.

The article looks at the everyday choices of the type of food that we eat are determined by behavior. The central argument of the authors is that poor diet choices are more common among those individuals who have less consideration of future consequences. The researchers look at how consideration of future consequences (CFC) influences healthy eating.

While I can’t speak for everyone in the United States, majority say they eat healthy while many fall short of getting key vitamins and minerals that indicate a legitimate healthy lifestyle. Many people from America, especially children, would rather have McDonalds or any fast food restaurant, than a healthy dinner or salad. The first topic I am interested in is the new dietary guidelines. Although the National Restaurant Association (NRA) is all for the suggested guidelines, there are many groups against the new guidelines. I thought at first I would be all for the guidelines, to my surprise after reading a little of the information given from the both sides I am against them. Some experts are saying we need to worry about the environment as well when we are forcing these regulations on so many groups. Not just restaurants are affected by these guidelines, school cafeterias are also made to follow these rules as well.
Detrimental health issues or health problems such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes etc.… are prevented with the proper diet and nutrients. The American standard diet includes fast foods, large portions, and high-fat foods. When it comes to cravings, burgers, fries, pizza, sweets, and soft drinks are American’s weakness especially for busy parents, busy adults, and late nights. However the American diet wasn’t always dominated by burgers, chicken nuggets, fries, pizza, soft drinks and sweets (Liebman, 2010). With these detrimental health issues being preventable we have to start changing now for a better futures.

If our society really knew what was in our food. . Would they still eat it? It does not seem fair that we would even have to question our food, what is in it, where it can from or even what it even is? It is not a surprise that America is the number one obese country in the nation.
Here are some ways to make healthy changes in your eating habits: Keep more fruits, low-fat dairy products (low-fat milk and low-fat yogurt), vegetables, and whole-grain foods at home and at work. Focus on adding healthy food to your diet, rather than just taking unhealthy foods away. Try to eat a family meal every day at the kitchen or dining table. This will help you focus on eating healthy meals. Buy a healthy-recipe book, and cook for yourself.
