I choose the Crystal River State Archaeological State Park in Crystal River , Florida. It is more commonly know as the Indian Burial Mounds. The park itself is in a beautiful location , overlooking the Crystal River on one side and grassy plains on the other side. There is recreational activities in the park as well as the museum. Some of the activities are salt and freshwater fishing , picnicking , bird watching and nature walks.
The “bell-shaped stupas” in Borobudur show how Buddhism was elaborated as it spread across Asian countries (Doc 2). The stupas create the shape of the Buddha as it is made for meditation and are distinctively found in Southeast Asia. Furthermore, this shows how art portrayed new developments of Buddha’s image, such as in the “Seated Buddha of Gandhara” in Pakistan (Doc 4). The statue represents the Eastern and Western culture as Greeks made the statues resemble Greek gods to portray the Buddha wearing a toga. This combines the culture of Hellenism and transforms Buddhism into a different image.
For example, the Abu Simbel which is two temple that were cut into a stone cliff. The larger one is Ramses which has four sixty-seven-foot statues of him seated in a throne with two on each side of the entrance. The other temple is for his wife Nefertari and has six statues of her and Ramses in front. Also, Ramses II also built the Ramesseum which is a memorial temple dedicated to himself to show his greatness.
This emphasis on healing is important because it creates the idea that the Wall is a symbol for healing. By representing mending the Monument comforts those who lost people in the war and closes their metaphorical wounds by giving them some closure about their fallen loved ones. An organization needs to be aware of the location, material, and historical memories in remembering an event or person and in the creation of a monument. Finding the proper location to create a monument and memorializing an event or person is very important to take in consideration to prevent disrespect towards the monument. It is extremely necessary to find a “specially valued place set aside for collective gathering… ” (Source A). Furthermore, the respect for a monument is greatly needed to successfully memorialize an event or person.
A memorial site designed by Rodney L¿on was completed in 2007. The memorial consists of a sunken Libation Court (gathering space for cultural ceremonies). It is surrounded by a Circle of the Diaspora inscribed with signs, symbols, and images of the African Diaspora. A Wall of Remembrance describes events that contributed to the African Burial Ground 's creation. The reinterment locations are marked with four Ancestral Pillars.the African Burial Ground is possibly the only preserved, urban, eighteenth-century African cemetery in America.
Around the world people memorialize great hero’s, express great sorrow for those lost in battle, and celebrate the triumphs that had built the ground and infrastructure from one nation to the next; monuments are constructed to remember our past. Yet, monuments cannot be constructed out of nothing ,great goes into planning, paying, and research that goes into making sure correct homage is paid those who are due. If one wishes to build a memorial a few things must be taken into consideration,making sure the monument honors or recognizes an important person or event, the design of the building including shape and size,and lastly the monument is placed in an acceptable location based on the subject matter. The most important factor in building a monument is making something that people will recognize and feel an attachment to.
The 8th grade class took a 4 day trip to Washington. We did many things to explore Washington D.C. including visiting monuments. Some people think differently of how a monument should be made. Good monuments to some people could be to make people remember about the person or thing being remembered or to just reflect the person’s life or importance. In “The Follower Problem” by David Brooks, David thinks a good monument should show power and authority.
The need to memorialize events or people is complex; in some cases, monuments honor moments of great achievement, while in other cases, monuments pay homage to deep sacrifice. A monument 's size, location, and materials are all considerations in planning and creating a memorial to the past. In any case, the need to honor or pay homage to a specific person or event is prevalent within society. A monument has to mean something to the society it is place in. The location of a monument is perhaps the most important aspect of creating a successful monument to honor and show respect to a person or event.
Creating a monument for an person or event is an great idea if they have did something significant in the historic life that have changed us in some way. People that have been leaders or made an great impact on modern lives they should be notice because of what they did to help. Some people just want there name on something for little stuff thats not making history or changing people’s lives. That why i think people or an event that has already occurred should have an monument. Memorializing a person or event and creating a monument is an great idea because illustrates our past that some may not know that happen and that a person or event should be honored.
I chose this memorial because of the controversy surrounding Thomas Jefferson memorials throughout the country. Hundreds of statues, plaques, historical artifacts, and monuments have been dedicated to Thomas Jefferson across the country in memory to his presence as a founding father. Recently, there has been controversy surrounding these memorials due to Thomas Jefferson’s disreputable past with owning slaves and how he treated them. I thought looking at his statue and tombstone through a human rights lens would be interesting and internally thought provoking. The statue was given to the university by trustees of the Jefferson club.
Monuments that are constructed in order to give commendation to people, places, or events are located all over the globe. It is very possible for someone to find a few in their very own town. Although there may be negative controversy on certain monuments, many throughout the world have changed individual’s lives tremendously in a beneficial way. One monument in particular has stood tall through it all and has had so much positive effect on millions of people from the beginning of time. One hundred and thirty years later this monument continues to impact people’s lives from all over the world.
In ancient Egyptian civilisation, religion was heavily embedded in ritualistic performances. The material with what these pieces were made was chosen by the ruler for reasons like durability and expression of his or her wealth. The purpose of the piece ‘Victory Stele of Naram-Sin’ was made do illustrate Kind Naram-Sin’s victory and conquer of the mountain, ‘Hatshepsut with Offering Jars’ was made to honor the gods, and finally, ‘Khafre Enthroned’ which was made to just simply depict him as an enthroned divine ruler.
