The Civil War is one of the bloodiest wars in American history, but what started it? What did it lead to? In the book, “Two Miserable Presidents”, by Steve Sheinkin, the author explains events that led up to the civil war and how they were finally resolved through the leadership of Abraham Lincoln. Throughout the book, we learn about the causes of the Civil War through anecdotes and we learn “everything your schoolbooks didn’t tell you about the Civil War.” He gives a humorous 13 step guide in ripping a country in two and names each section of the book a with a captivating yet true title.
In your discussion, there are valid points about the Article of Confederation that cripple the government and the states. The balance and supportive evidence allows an articulate flow of your paragraphs as I read along. In an agreement, the Article of Confederation left the government with minimal power and the states with more only provided the instability to those actions and affect the colonist of each state. Also, the uneasiness of the government’s control and the state’s managing within the states left other affairs in question, such as the foreign trade, debt from the previous war and treaties or taxation. However, those issues only formulated the urgency for additional balance among the government and states.
In the texts, "In Response to Executive Order 9066" by Dwight Okita and "Mericans" by Sandra Cisneros, a topic of American identity and perception of identity is shared. Both texts take a brief look at the lives, characteristics, and feelings of young girls living a bicultural life. In Cisnero's story, the girl seems caught between her two different cultures, and she struggles to connect with her Mexican heritage. In Okita's poem, the girl has a clear sense of her identity and place as an American. Culture is experienced and interpreted differently by each individual and each group of people.

The articles “Why the Democrats lost their nerve in the shutdown battle” by Robert Costa (Chicago Tribune) and “Winners and losers of the government shutdown” by Amber Phillips (Washington Post) show how the government can win when shut down. The authors are biased to one side due to their political viewpoints. Costa and Phillips use their biased word choice to show who they think won the government shutdown.
Assimilation: the process of taking in and fully understanding information or ideas. This is a common topic throughout both "Response to Executive Order 9066" and "Mericans", two stories about other cultures blending into American culture. Both stories focus on the toxicity of American culture and the racial divide between people. Even though the main characters in both texts have completely assimilated into American culture, they are still treated like outsiders and considered foreign, whether they grew up in the US or not. Although the stories diverge in terms of circumstances, tone, and mood, both generally reflect on the negative impact of American culture and how it has affected the lives of immigrants.

Barack Obama’s win for President in 2009 was a historical moment for the United States. His inaugural speech was much anticipated, because this was going to set the tone for his presidency. His speech told the American people that improving the economy is one of his priorities, but there were also other areas he would like to improve like healthcare and the education system. This was a speech that was meant to persuade the American public to take action for them to rise as a nation again, and for them to put their trust into him.
