In the book Zinn, The author gives a point of view of Christopher Columbus that is usually not given. Most of the time the story of Christopher Columbus is told from a historian point of view. They usually tell you of his mission, and of the three ships that he takes in order to find gold and other new riches. Zinn informs us that he is not the hero that, that we all think that he is. It shows us that he tortured, abused, and overwhelmingly embarrasses the Arwark Indians.
These strengths include the explanation of John Ross’s involvement in Indian removal, the use of statistics to back up his claims about cotton production in America, and the fact that he doesn’t only blame Jackson for the atrocities that occurred. Wallace includes a personal example as one of his main points, adding to the appeal of the essay. He personalizes Indian removal and does an excellent job of explaining how the events affected Ross. Another strength in this essay is the amount of statistics Wallace incorporates about cotton production. He explains how much cotton America produced compared to the world, how much cotton the world required, and how important cotton was to America's economy.

This principle of creating a favorable export and import balance is mercantilism. Mercantilism shaped the life of eighteenth century Colonial America by regulating their trade, by economically weakening them and putting them in debt, and by socially creating the tensions that led to the Revolutionary War.
The marketing of products and ideas influence all people 's lives and has been a part of the human experience for thousands of years. This marketing can take on a number of different forms, but one of the most common forms is propaganda. According to Fleming, propaganda is the use of specific "techniques to influence thinking in whatever direction" the author wants and in most cases to "sell" an idea or product (3). Two of the earliest accounts of this popular marketing method, in Western Hemisphere, come for the letters and reports of both Christopher Columbus and John Smith. Both of which tried to marketed the newly discovered and settled North American continent.
“Necessity is the mother of all invention.” Cotton labor conducted by slaves was arduous and took long periods of time. A necessity for a faster way to separate the cotton seeds from the fiber evolved because it would take slaves laborious hours to created small amounts of cotton. In 1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin and patented it a year later which mechanized the cotton process. This had the benefit of lowering the price of cotton production and removing slaves from that part of the process.
On October 12, 1492 three months into his journey to find India, Christopher Columbus traveled upon an already discovered land in the caribbean. Three Spanish ships with 87 men aboard landed in a place they referred to as "The New World. " This was just the beginning of how America became the country it is today. Along with this new land came new discoveries, such as exotic plants and animals that were shipped back to Spain. Unlike Europe, this "New World" domesticated corn, chili, pumpkins, tomatoes, and potatoes.
“Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress”, chapter one of “A People’s History of the United States”, written by professor and historian Howard Zinn, concentrates on a different perspective of major events in American history. It begins with the native Bahamian tribe of Arawaks welcoming the Spanish to their shores with gifts and kindness, only then for the reader to be disturbed by a log from Columbus himself – “They willingly traded everything they owned… They would make fine servants… With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.” (Zinn pg.1) In the work, Zinn continues explaining the unnecessary evils Columbus and his men committed unto the unsuspecting natives.

The source, Christopher Columbus’s Journal, is a personal written account by Columbus of his time sailing to the New World and exploring it. Columbus's original Journals were lost. The original copies were sent to the King and Queen, however the parts that are left are from Bartoleme de Las Cases, one of the first men to come to the New World. He did not agree with Christopher Columbus’s way of treating the Indians, so it is certainly possible that the remaining parts may be tweaked to make Columbus look bad in the eyes of the people. Loewen (11) explains that, “Through this process, our educational media turn flesh-and-blood individuals into pious, perfect creatures without conflicts, pain, credibility, or human interest.” Dr. Jendian explained that heroification presents history characters as superhuman heroes.
Christopher Columbus and Hernan Cortes were both famous Spanish adventurers during the Age of Exploration. When the explorers came upon land, they encountered two different cultures. In 1492, Columbus encountered the Taino people, and in 1520, Cortes encountered the Aztecs. The two cultures that the men encountered were different in more ways than they were similar in regards to how the natives treated the men, what weapons they had and their war-like behavior, their technologically advancements, their housing and architectural structures, and even their religion.

Although some refuse to believe this, it has been proven to be the truth. Throughout Charles C. Mann’s article from The Atlantic, “1491”, he discusses three main points: how many things that are viewed as facts about the natives are actually not true, the dispute between the high and low counters, and the importance of the role disease played in the history of the Americas.
