In the article “ Thomas Jefferson on Freedom of Religion” tells about how Thomas Jefferson sought out to defend our religious rights of freedom. Jefferson wanted to have a separation of church and state but at the time many Americans believed that government should support religion. So by him doing this it made people question his faith in whether he believed in God or not. Many people after this seen him differently as a person, they seen him as an atheist. He believed that no one should take away our natural rights and be able to control what we do or do not believe in. Since Jefferson brought up the problem that everyone should have their own freedom of religion , it raised discussion in many. They saw Jefferson as an enemy of religion because people ended up seeing him as an atheist since they believed that if Jefferson was really religious then why would he sought out to defend our religious rights ? if he too believed in God. Jefferson's belief of freedom had nothing to do with his belief in religion or others beliefs he just wanted Americans to have a say in what they believed in.
