In my elementary and middle school, learning to speak and write Spanish was required. Most of my classmates also grew up in Hispanic families. They also spoke English but they would only speak Spanish to the other Hispanics. What made this interesting is that they didn’t think I could speak Spanish, but I could understand everything they were saying. Being able to understood all of their gossip and all of the things they said about everyone else in the class was an advantage I had.
I am of Hispanic descent, but since I live in the United States, I have lost touch with my Hispanic roots. I don’t know Spanish and I hate spicy food. I might look Hispanic, but I don’t associate with the many stereotypes that come with associating myself as a Hispanic. I remember the first time visited my family in Mexico. I have heard many ugly stereotypes about Hispanics and I was not very excited to go.
If the person is in a foreign country, knowing the language can help the person make new friends and experience things other tourists might not be able to because they do not speak the language. Many people believe Spanish to be a hard language to learn because of its tense system, but it is actually easy to pick up. Hence, the students are encouraged to learn on other language.
