Excellent teaching can be defined by ‘that which leads to improved student progress,’ (Coe, et al, 2014). Although it is not quite that simple, and measuring student’s achievements against teaching and learning can be difficult. There are many other factors which make teaching great, for example the pedagogical knowledge, quality of instruction, classroom environment, behaviour management and professional behaviour. One barrier to defining excellence is that the attributes are very broad range, which leads them to be interpreted differently, and it is not always clear if excellent practice has been observed in the classroom, (Coe, et al, 2014). Taking this into account, I have considered my own practice and discovered, though other professional’s observations on me (appendix 1 & 2), one area for improvement is Assessment for Learning (AFL). Therefore, assessment is undertaken to identify the children’s attainment and grades to compare performance and progress, and this can be conducted through summative, formative and ipsative assessment. Summative assessment is often used to summarize the learning at the end of a lesson, or for a specific period of time to ‘summarize the achievement status of a student,’ (Sadler, 1989:120). Summative assessment is useful as teachers get an insight into the students’ knowledge, but it often comes too late, at the end of a subject, when it is not possible to improve the learning. Therefore, a more effective evaluation tool is required, that is where assessment for learning, or ‘formative assessment,’ can be used.
