In Upper Nyack, New York a 15-year old girl committed suicide at the Summit school. The Summit Children’s Residence Center helps young people with emotional problems. It is located near the Hudson River the school offers education and a residential campus for students ages 13-21. Most of the kids at the school have problems (psychological and family issues). The school is basically a treatment center. The young girl who committed suicide could have had problems that were so bad off that she couldn’t deal with them or maybe she could have been upset with her parents for sending her there. She could have had a mental disorder that impacted every aspect of her life and she could have seen no reason to be alive. She could have been unhappy and suffering in pain that could have affected her mind and body. These are just a few things that could have been the reason why she committed suicide. Social integration is “the set of arrangements adopted by the society and the group to accept a new member among them, and to facilitate this acceptance process”. In this current event I believe the young girl was having a lot of problems and she could have been feeling alone. According to Durkheim he would say that the young girl committed egoistic suicide which is when one feels disconnected or separated from society. One feels integrated into the society by family, friends, the community, and other social bonds. The young girl could have felt useless and felt like she didn’t have a purpose in the world.
