Sun-hee and her family have always been free, until the Japanese came in and started taking over. Sun-hee and her brother had to start speaking Japanese everywhere, they are only allowed to speak Korean in their homes. The Japanese don’t even let them have their own flags hang. If the Japanese hear or see anything Korean they will beat the owner. Sun-hee’s uncle tries to fight the Japanese. For example he writes a newspaper about the Japanese and published it. The Japanese want to kill the uncle, so he runs away.

Tae-yul is an older teenage boy who is full of intelligence, bravery, and chutzpah. First of all, Tae-yul will stand up for his country, his people, his little sister and his family and he wants them to be safe and happy. Tae-yul’s Uncle is also very important to him. Tae-yul also does a lot great act of courage. Tae-yul joins the Imperial Army. Tae-yul’s entire life he wanted to fly a plane. Then Tae-yul does a risky mission while flying a plane to prove the Koreans aren’t cowards. Sun-hee is another important character, but Sun-hee is very nosey. Sun-hee eavesdrops in to Uncle’s, Dad’s, and Tae-yul’s conversations. When Tae-yul comes out from talking to his Dad and Uncle, Sun-hee is right there to ask questions about what she heard. Sun-hee is a person who helps other people. Sun-hee loves her uncle very much. She tries to protect and warn her Uncle when she hears news that would harm Uncle. Sun-hee also helps around the house.
