Abstract
Sunday Friends is a non-profit organization located in San Jose that aims to break the generational cycle of poverty within low-income communities by fostering positive development through education, guidance, and empowerment (Sunday Friends 2018). This organization seeks to alleviate poverty by providing individuals with programs and the tools necessary to be confident and economically stable. The rent relief program allows Sunday Friends families to earn income that can be used towards rent when they complete the application procedures. The proposed research will allow Sunday Friends to better understand the outcomes of the rent relief program and its broader impacts on the lives of those who participate in such a program. An anthropological perspective can lead to a better-nuanced understanding into the lives of those marginalized and underrepresented communities living in Silicon Valley. This project will permit Sunday Friends to report how rent relief has impacted the lives of low-income individuals. It can also help foster new conversations, topics, research strategies, and lines of inquiry. Also, the findings can be used to access more grants, funding, public and private donations that can be used to assist people struggling with the living conditions of Silicon Valley. Service and design allows the researcher to mediate, create, and improve services since the service system exchanges information with those who use it and vice-versa. (Bloomberg and Darrah 2015). The practice of service and design can be used to inform Sunday Friends about the services they provide to either create, mediate, or improve their services based on the information that is extrapolated from this analysis (Bloomberg and Darrah 2015). Potentially, this project will allow Sunday Friends to assess the outcomes of the rent relief program and use the data gathered in this project to either mediate, improve, or create new services that could potentially benefit the people who use the programs.
