How do the stories of The Lion King and the Rise of Sundjata share themes of West African culture? The story of Sundjata is about the rise of the most potent king Mali has ever seen, Sundjata. The story of Sundjata is an integral part of West African culture and is one of the most-told folktales in West Africa. West African folktales are stories passed down from generation by griots. Griots are West African storytellers whose job is to preserve West African history by passing down information verbally, this practice is called oral tradition. The Lion King is a story about a king being betrayed by his brother only for his son to come back and overthrow the tyrannical king. The stories are similar because in both stories the father of the future king dies. In the story of Sundjata the father, King Maghan passes away and in The Lion King the father, Mufasa is murdered by his brother, Scar. Also in both stories, the future king flees his homeland after a tragedy has taken place. Another similarity is In The Rise of Sundjata after King Maghans first wife sent away Sundjatas griot to dwell in King Soso’s land with Sundjata’s mother fearing for her son's safety she and him fled from their home. In The Lion King, Simba flees from the pride lands after Scar tells him that it's his fault Mufasa was killed. One difference between the two stories is in The Lion King Mufasa’s wife is not an ugly maiden whereas in The Story of Sundjata King Maghans's wife was an ugly maiden. As you can see the stories of The Lion King and The Story of Sundjata have many differences and similarities but one similarity that is prominent throughout both stories is the theme of West African culture but how is there evidence in the symbolism of both stories that proves
