An example of shadow being used is when Joe got home to Max; Norma’s butler, former director, and ex-husband, in the garage when he pulled in. Max always had a mysterious trait so with the shadow covering almost half of his face with the high-contrast light it created a suspicious scene. An example of a close-up shot is the final scene. Norma is descending from the grand staircase in her home towards what she believes to be movie camera in a slow motion. As she walks down, she says “I’m ready for my close-up” although, the shot isn’t even a close-up, it’s a medium shot that fades into a black end screen. This scene captured Norma’s delusion of still being a film star. There is mise-en-scene throughout Sunset Boulevard. Some example of dominating characteristic is her clothing, Norma is always seen in long, extravagant gown even in her own home. Norma tendency to control Joe’s whereabouts also ties in as well as the setting being in her home. However, Joe is the dominating character with not so obvious signs. Joe is the dominating character because this is his story, he is telling how his death came to be. Joe showed signs of dominance when he tricked Norma to let him stay at the home the first night, so he could hide from the car collector. Joe also shows his dominant role when he took the phone away from Norma as she was speaking to Betty. In this scene, Joe had enough of Norma controlling his life, so he invited Betty over to show her what Norma was going to explode him to be.
