Among the many devastating natural disaster events known to the human race, hurricanes are on the list. The hurricane is one of the most natural disasters that one may experience, especially in the Caribbean. A hurricane is a low-pressure system, with strong winds at the speeds of 74mph up to 200 mph, heavy rainfall, and thunderstorms. Furthermore, hurricanes find their way to land, and cause devastation. Indeed, these massive storms can have many destructive factors, depending on its wind speeds, storm surges, rainfall amounts, and storm size. Well, an experience with hurricanes that will never be forgotten, was an experience with Hurricane “Super” Sandy. Natural disasters are not good for the economy and repair and reconstruction efforts will replace infrastructure with newer buildings. Hurricane Sandy devastating effects on people and property in New Jersey and New York was estimated $65 billion. Moreover, according to Superstorm Sandy: The Inevitable Destruction and Reconstruction of the Jersey Shore written by Dianne C. Bates, “A total of 147 people in the Caribbean and United States (12 in New Jersey) died as a direct result of the storm, which has now been estimated to be the second costliest hurricane in US history after Katrina.” (Bates 7) Sandy is the second costliest storm on record, right under Hurricane Katrina which made US landfall in 2005, which racked up over $100 billion in losses, and Hurricane Andrew, in 1992, which generated $46 billion in inflation-adjusted losses, according to NOAA estimates. Travel and Tourism has also been affected. For example, vacations were delayed or canceled. Furthermore, the storm’s destruction passed through towns that were the center of attraction and amusement damaging roller coasters; washing out train tracks; crumpled railings, flooded tunnels, hospitals, and schools; and power outages across parts of NJ and NY. Across the state of New York, many people are being assisted from charities. All donations that are made to The Times Neediest Cases Fund go to one of seven charities: Brooklyn Community Services; Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New York; Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens; The Children’s Aid Society; Community Service Society of New York; Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies; and UJA-Federation of New York.
