Robots replacing people “Supertoys” Brian Aldiss’s “Supertoys Last All Summer Long” is an intriguing short story for several reasons. First of all, because this short story uses robots to be anything you want them to be. It’s a world where people live in false surroundings because mostly everyone has robots instead of kids. In summary of “Life after New Media: Mediation as a Vital Process” by Sarah Kember and Zylinska Joanna, they talk about Aldiss short story and how the boy who was a robot was able to love. They also say that the machines are more advance and are able to show emotions and be a friend (112-13). This just lets us know that our world is changing and coming up with more advance technology. The reason they have robots as a replacement for kids is because the world is overcrowded, and they have to request permission to have a real kid; the people didn’t really have anything else to do but live their own private lives. Most of the people felt lonely and didn’t seem to be too happy. In the article “Closer to the machine? Intelligent environments, new forms of possession and the rise of the supertoy” by Nigel Thrift writes “These robots are not really toys, given their cost and complexity” (396). Over an extended period of time, the wearable computer begins to function as a true extension of the mind and body, and no longer feels as if it is a separate entity. In fact, the user will adapt to the apparatus in the same way that we adapt to shoes and clothing to such a degree that being without them most of us would feel extremely uncomfortable.
