I matriculated at Howard University as a Civil Engineering major with the desire to focus on project management. After three semesters, I became more passionate about attaining a broader perspective on project management. As a result, I switched my major to Supply Chain Management. I signed up for INROADS, a non-profit organization with a mission to increase ethnic diversity in corporate America. As an INROADS intern, I had to complete an interview and maintain a 3.0 GPA. After succeeding in the interview, I was paired with a wise mentor, Jay Nwachu. He presented me with opportunities with different companies for a supply chain internship for the summer of 2015. After my first summer experience, I earned a part-time position to continue at Harris during the school year, while I attended school full-time. I accepted this offer and made a plan to attack my newly loaded schedule. My daily routine was waking up at 4:30 am and going to bed at midnight to balance work, track practice and school. With hard work and determination, I was able to become even more focused than I was before. I came from 3.10 GPA in spring 2015 to a 3.44, 3.53, 3.33 and 3.56 GPA respectively in my last four semesters of college. As an athlete, I have always been determined, but in this particular case, my determination allowed me not to settle because times got hard. I could’ve easily gone to a mall and gotten a job in retail or at a restaurant but I believed that my supply chain degree that I worked hard for was worth so much more than that. I was driven to work towards being a Project Manager and I wanted to start that career path right out of college. This experience also gave me a new passion for Logistics which has now made me question if I want to go into Project Management or Logistics, but that is a problem that I don’t mind having.
