Zion Harrell Ms. Barlow May 14, 2018 G Period/ ROOSEVELT When someone is given a chance to gain recognition, they usually take it. The home front gave everyone a chance to become a hero. World War II was a global military conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945. This war was fought between the Allied powers and the Axis. WWII claimed lives ranging from 50-80 million, including those of the civilians. Although the idea is that success is to be won on the battlefield. A lot of the victory was due to the supportive Homefront. During World War II, citizens who preserved food and other materials played a big part in the success. Women would strive to gain significance in times of sexism, so they would help with war effort in hope of relevance.According to Tending the Homefront: The Many Roles of California Women in WWII by Donna Graves, "Women worked in factories, building ships and planes. They also worked in steel mills, offices and hospitals.” But this was not all they did. Women also kept their jobs as mothers and homemakers. The war could not have been won without them." This means that women help out behind the scenes to ensure the war was won. Because of their endeavors as workers the soldiers were able to successfully fight their enemies. Another group of people that wanted to gain value as Americans were African American women. African American women suffered both racial and gender discrimination, so they had to fight very hard even to enter skilled spots on the production line in aircraft, shipyard work, and other well-paying war industries.
