Supreme Court Vs French Constitutional Council

The two political systems that I choose to compare are the United States Supreme Court and the French Constitutional Council. They are very much alike and different in what powers they hold and what their role is in the government. Ill explain how they were came about or started, how the members are chosen, the types of cases they are willing to take, and the powers each system has in their government. If I had to choose between the two, I would choose the United States Supreme Court and I will tell you why later.

The things that are alike are the obvious things like they are both court systems that are made up by nine members that are chosen by the president in their country. They both are responsible for overseeing the constitutional government actions of their country and protecting the rights citizens have in their country. The more important things within these systems are the differences that set them apart. The Supreme Court is apart of the Judicial branch of the government while the Constitutional council is separate from the Judicial branch of government. The Constitutional council will only hear cases from members of the government like the President of France, the prime minister, the president of the Senate, or the president of the National Assembly while the Supreme Court will hear cases from criminals and the regular citizen. When talking about how they decide if an issue is constitutional it says “When deciding whether the issue before the Constitutional Council is constitutional, the council interprets the constitution broadly, unlike the U.S. Supreme Court, which must base its opinions more closely on what is contained within the articles of the U.S. Constitution.” This just makes it seem like the United States system is more organized than Constitutional …show more content…

With how similar these two are and how their goals in the government are to look at things under the constitution. They only accept appeals from people that are higher up on the food chain than the people that are not like the Supreme Court is at least willing to do. The decisions of the Supreme Court usually affect the whole world in a major way, like the decision about the Mike Brown issue, the ending of obamacare, or if they were to speak on gay marriage I think decisions like these will have big affects on the world. The Supreme Court also has to deal with judicial responsibilities while the Constitutional Council does not; they are strictly concerned with the French Constitution. On the Supreme Court building the slogan “Equal Justice Under Law” which is what people want and is why I would choose the Supreme Court over the French Constitutional
