In “Flowers For Algernon” by: Daniel Keyes, a low IQ man named Charlie undergoes a surgery to raise his IQ.While undergoing the process of the surgery he is going through many mentally challenging obstacles, He is emotianlly unstable where half his traits are still child like. As he gets smart he starts to break apart from friends. He gains back memories with his abusive mom. He starts to regress with IQ he studies and runs tests for weeks and cannot find an answer. He then decides to send himself to a home for the disabled, he says bye to all his friends and family. The doctors should have done the surgery because of how great it was for science, It allowed him to become aware of many things in life like how people actually felt about him, and how it …show more content…

This is greatly shown on pg 94, “When we got to her doorway, she turned quickly and kissed my cheek, Good night Charlie. I'm glad you called me. I’ll see you at the lab. She closed the door and I stood outside the building and looked at the light in her apartment window until it went out. There is no question about it now, I’m in love.” Before the surgery, he didn’t feel “love,” for anybody. But now, he has feelings for Alice and Alice has feelings for him. This shows that other people are able to feel for him and actually take action and make it happen. Another way is shown in the book in this quote, “I was becoming irritated, and I could see that Algernon, upset by the smoke, the buzzing, the unaccustomed surroundings, was moving around his cage nervously.” Charlie felt bad for Algernon having to go through this. So that is why he takes him out his cage because of the feelings he has toward Algernon that he wouldn’t of happened before.
