People of today are now considering a surgical technologist’s job as one of the most promising careers in the field of health care. As a matter of fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of surgical technologists to increase 30% by 2022. This leaves behind all the other occupations with their projected 11% growth. The BLS projection simply indicates that the said profession is continually growing which brings along great news for many aspirants. Another thing that might entice a lot of surgical tech wanna-bes is the good compensation they can enjoy. In the year 2012, the median wage for surgical technologists was $41,790 whereas for other jobs, it only reached $34,750. Physical Stamina The time spent on every medical operation may vary depending on what procedure will be done, the patient’s current health status and many other factors. Thus, a surgical technologist must be able to withstand working in a standing position for long, extended hours. 4. Invulnerability Working in the health care industry means you’ll have to deal with all types of people. Like any other job elsewhere, your boss might either be a great person or the other way around. Well, you shouldn’t expect to be met standing ovation –or be appreciated after you’ve done a good job because this is exactly what you get paid for. Failures do happen. No one is infallible and you have to learn to accept criticism. If you’ve made a mistake, treat it as a lesson. Instead of getting frustrated, learn from it because, unfortunately, sometimes in surgery an error might cost a life. Negative statements and harsh words may be thrown in your way especially when you’re a newcomer so you better brace yourself.
