I am writing to express my interest in applying for Masters of Science Programme in Hydrographic Surveying at the University of Southern Mississippi. With my present involvement as a Surveyor aboard Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Hydrographic Ship, I wish to develop my technical knowledge in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning techniques and turn my focus towards their wide-scale applications in Ellipsoidally Referenced Surveying (ERS). From my perspective, the academic discipline covered will best suit my professional goals through reviewing the course syllabus presented online. Finally, the prospect of joining in your MSc Programme is an outstanding approach to cultivate hands-on experience as your university is well equipped …show more content…
Throughout my studies, I have maintained an excellent performance. I completed an internship on board the RMN warship for six months. This gave me a foundational to apply theoretical knowledge in a real world and also ignited my attention in Seamanship and Nautical Science such as chartwork and oceanography. On top of that, I persisted involved in campus activities by volunteering for Induction and Orientation Programmes as a student support team. My responsibilities were providing a comprehensive range of services dedicated to helping prospective students make the most of student life such as adjusting to a new and unfamiliar culture and adapting to different social hierarchies in military lifestyles. Furthermore, I was highly committed to the development of a hitherto non-existent University Rugby Club. We actively engaged in promoting rugby sport on campus and managed to establish a well-known Rugby Club with an excellent record on the national level tournament. Lastly, with all of the duties at hand, I remained vigilant with my academic performance. I was hence awarded a CGPA of 3.32 and I am among the top five in …show more content…
I started my hydrographic career in 2015 after completed a 25-week course of FIG/IHO Category B Hydrographic Surveying at HMAS Penguin, Sydney, Australia. As a surveyor, I have the proficiency to proceed to sea to make a positive impact for the mariner and also have a very specific and equally important role in supporting military operations. As part of my role, I liaise with military personnel to ensure the safety of the sea in order for them to achieve their operational objectives as well as provide assurance to other beneficiaries of hydrography that includes and not limited to those that depend on marine spatial data infrastructure (MSDI), coastal zone management, defence, security and even to weather and climate sciences. During this role, I undertook and completed several courses such as ‘Multibeam Acquisition and Processing’, ‘Tidal Analysis and Prediction’ and ‘Backscatter Data Processing’. My responsibility, diligence and management aptitude were integral to the role, however, it was clear that my future progress was decelerated by my lack of technical, high-accuracy GNSS and the uncertainties estimates related training. The appraisal of GNSS observations used for vertical positioning in hydrography for bathymetric quality control addresses the next stage in my
