DBQ Essay Did you know the 13th amendment gave African Americans their freedom from slavery. Then the 14th amendment gave them their citizenship. Finally, the 15th amendment was passed so that they had the right to vote. These amendments were passed during reconstruction. Even with these amendments, freedmen’s lives didn’t change much socially, economically, and politically throughout reconstruction.
These three amendments are all very powerful and important amendments because the 14th amendment granted equal rights under the law and in Eric Forner ’s words he states “While the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment in 1868 granted former enslaved people the right to be recognized as citizens” Downs, Jim. Sick from Freedom (p. 8). The 13th amendment abolished all slavery and the book by Eric Forner states “the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment, which formally abolished the institution of slavery.” Downs, Jim.
After the Civil War, the U.S.A. had to reconstruct itself which means that it basically had to rebuild itself so it could go back into its normal form. While the U.S.A. was going into reconstruction they made many Amendments. But, the most important Amendment did not accomplish its goals. I am talking about the 15th Amendment that was created with purpose to let African Americans vote. But, thankfully one of the Amendments greatly succeeded and that is the 13th Amendment, which greatly succeeded.
For example direct primary where voters chose candidates to run in an election, a secret ballot where candidates are selected from a single ballot and recall which allows voters to remove an elected official from office. The 19th Amendment was put to place, it gave women the right to vote. The 17th Amendment was also introduced, it gave voters the right to elect their senators
The 19th amendment was important because it granted women the right to vote, which was known as woman suffrage. It wasn’t until 1848 that the women’s movement for rights launched in Seneca Falls, NY. In order to get this, it took 70 years. On May 21,1919 U.S. representative James R. Mann, representative of Illinois and chairman of suffrage suggested a solution. It passed then 2 weeks later June 4 it was passed by the senate.
They Did It ! Recently a decision was made that will change America forever. On August 18th Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th amendment, therefore granting women the right to vote in all states. This decision with certainly be met with both support and opposition from many.

During the mid-nineteenth century three key amendments, known as The Reconstruction Amendments were made to attempt to legally acknowledge the rights of blacks in America. The first was the 13th amendment that was ratified on December 18, 1865 and is associated with the abolishment of slavery. However the 13th amendment states that slavery is not allowed “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted” (“Primary Documents in American History." 13th Amendment…).
The Importance of the 24th Amendment and Effects. The U.S. Constitution has been amended twenty-seven times since ratified on June 21, 1788. These Amendments have been crucial to the up-keeping of America and its constant changes. The most of important of which being the 24th Amendment, which protected voting rights from taxes. The 24th amendment reads as followed “The Twenty-fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution prohibits both Congress and the states from conditioning the right to vote in federal elections on payment of a poll tax or other types of tax”.

The Fourteenth Amendment (Amendment XIV) The amendments were put into place to protect the rights and civil liberties of all American citizens from the federal government. However, prior to the fourteenth amendment, there was no certainty with the constitution. The constitution did not state in a clear enough way who was protected under it and exactly what rights you had as an American Citizen. The 14th amendment was in response to the just passed thirteenth amendment, which ended slavery in all of the southern states.
The freedom in the new society led to more improvements and beliefs on how to make the changed society better. During the period of Reconstruction, three new amendments passed that had to do with the freedom and rights of freed African Americans. The 13th Amendment, passed in 1865, abolished slavery once and for all. Passed in 1866, the 14th Amendment gave everyone who was born in America full citizenship. Lastly, the 15th Amendment said that no citizen can be denied the right to vote because of your race, the color of your skin, or of previous conditions of enslavement.
I have chosen the woman suffrage movement and how this movement encouraged and led to the Nineteenth Amendment for my historical event analysis. The woman suffrage movement and the Nineteenth Amendment are important historical events. Gaining voting rights was an important step for the betterment of women. The Woman suffrage movement was an important social movement for women in our history. Because of women and men like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Henry Ward Beecher and Ralph Waldo Emerson, the Nineteenth Amendment was passed giving women the right to vote.
The most notable being the addition of three Amendments, the 13th, the 14th, and the 15th. These Amendments outlawed slavery, granted citizenship to all former slaves
Post Civil War, African Americans started to gain rights to gain rights, and soon gain rights equal to whites. While there were some people/things standing in their way (KKK, Black Codes), in the end they got what they needed; Equality.
