His novel, Dracula, tells the tale of five people who encounter and have to deal with the evil undead vampire Count Dracula, who terrorizes them and even causes two out of the five to become undead like himself. Thankfully, the group eventually discovers a way to eventually vanquish Dracula once and for all, and by the end of the book they destroy him, preventing him from terrorizing the people of Europe once and for all. Everybody knows the classic tale of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It is most famous for its introduction of the character of Count Dracula into both deep-rooted and contemporary literature and media. One critic claimed,” Bram Stoker set the ground rules for what a vampire should be.” It follows the story of Jonathan Harker, an English solicitor who visits Count Dracula in his castle in Transylvania – soon realising that he is being kept as a prisoner. Dracula forms a liking to the character of Lucy which ultimately leads to her death.
The central idea of this excerpt from Dracula was the fear of the prisoner living in the castle of Count Dracula who felt trapped and alone. The authors use of first person point of view of the prisoner was able to develop this central idea of fear because prisoner was able to describe his feelings first hand living in the castle with the Count as well as emphasize the thoughts that were scattered inside of his head during this time. An example of the author using first person point of view to help develop the central idea of fear was when the prisoner had realized that he was helpless in the situation of his current living conditions. The prisoner said "I think I must have been mad for the time, for I have behaved much as a rat does in a trap" (lines 4-5).
The word ‘prey,’ a chilling noun used to represent one being hunted. The word ‘prey’ is an obvious “it depends how you use it word, but how Bram Stoker uses it in Dracula is truly evil. Although Bram Stoker uses the word ‘prey’ figuratively through Dracula, when used literally it is at its most chilling. Stoker is using ‘prey’ commonly like anybody in our modern times would. Saying that something is “preying at one’s mind” or like a nag in more subtle terms.
Bram Stoker, describes one of the verbal taboos of the Victorian era, violence, through the representation of vampires as “monsters” through the point of view of their victims in his novel Dracula. Stoker portrays violence in three distinct categories- physical, visual and psychological. Each one of these categories is described by one of the antagonists in the Novel, with Count Dracula as the physical aspect of violence, his underlings, the female vampires as the visual and Renfield, the patient at Dr. Seward’s mental asylum, as the psychological aspect of violence. This essay looks at the portrayal of such Categorical violence as different renditions of a “monster” and considers why Stoker would segregate violence in such a manner.

Dating back to 1922, this movie reflects the bleak and frightening interwar years in Germany. Featuring a vampire called Count Orlok with the unforgettable Max Schreck, who was so tall, that in one scene he barely fits through a doorway. In order to maximize the rhetorical effect of mystery or uncanny – Murnau, in particular, is focusing at the lifeless becoming alive or the dead claiming life, as in the sequence of the vampire coming out of the shadow and slowly filling the screen with its horrific glance. In Dracula, author Bram Stoker has interesting ways of connecting various different instances to Count Dracula. He does so by using the motif of colours; specifically red, black and white. Each of these colours is used to describe different things well conveying one general message. Black, red and white relate to Dracula and connect to his character, while each having a purposeful meaning. Connecting to Dracula’s character, the motif of black symbolizes darkness and evil.

Count Dracula’s first appearance takes place in his castle in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania when Jonathan Harker arrives to discuss a real estate transaction. When Harker arrives at the castle, he first hears Dracula approaching in an ominous manner before he actually sees the Count. “I heard a heavy step approaching behind the great door, and saw through the chinks the gleam of a coming light,” Stoker writes, “then there was the sound of rattling chains and the clanking of massive bolts drawn back. A key was turned with the loud grating noise of long disuse, and the great door swung back”.

In the novel Dracula, author Bram Stoker creates a peculiar situation that pushes the main characters to decipher the supernatural from reality. Originally thought of as a myth, Dracula quickly becomes something more than the supernatural. By slowly building the conflict of Dracula himself, Stoker depicts all stages of the change from believing that Dracula is a fictitious character to being face to face with Dracula himself. It was at this moment when he realized what he was doing, and the damage he was going to cause to his country.
