Throughout the process of one day there are 86,400 seconds and 1,440 minutes that go by. Time creates many conflicts because it never stops for anyone or anything. For example, trying to complete a task or arrive somewhere in a certain amount of time can cause great amounts of stress. Having a time limit can even affect how someone foregoes to live out their life. In the novel Me Before You, by Jojo Moyes, the author uses time to create suspense and drama. Moyes achieves this by using imagery to paint pictures of seasons changing, tone to emphasize the conflicts, and suspense by giving a limited time frame.

Jojo Moyes creates emphasis on time by using imagery to paint pictures of the seasons changing. She helps the readers imagine the summer fading away and the snowflakes starting to fall on their small town. By doing this she shows that the time is passing by making the conflict become a more dire situation. The time frame that is given is six months and that’s when the conflict starts to occurs. Within the six months Louisa and Will’s family are trying to convince him to not go through with his plan to kill himself. As the time gets closer and closer the stress is amplified causing the readers to feel suspense. A passage that shows the full extent of the conflict is, “.He refused to let it go. Being Will, he always had to have the last word. He repeated his request every time i went in to see him until i almost had to persuade myself to go in each day. I don’t want to live like this, Mother. This is not the life i chose. There is no prospect of my recovery, hence it is a perfectly reasonable request to ask to end it in a manner i see fit” (Moyes 109). This quote shows the seriousness of Will’s proposal. He is planning on ending his life no matter what his friends and family
