In the short story “The Demon Lover” Mrs. Drover, forty four year old lady scape from the World War. She moved with her family to the countryside when the war worsened. They had to get used to their country life. When she tried to get back to her old house in London to look for things she wanted to take with her. Mrs. Drover found a letter addressed to her at the hall table. The letter was due in London the day she arrived there. She looked for any open window or door. She had a caretaker but she doesn’t trust him. She was annoyed by the fact that it remind her when she was younger and used to live in London. Drover. When Mrs. Drover saw the letter it surprises her. “A shaft of refracted daylight now lay across the hall. She stopped dead and stared at the hall table- on this lay a letter addressed to her” (Bowen 1084). In the short story “The Demon Lover’ the author uses suspense. It makes the reader wants to keep reading “No human eye watched Mrs. Drover’s return” (Bowen 1084). The author control the setting, atmosphere and scenes “It was late August; it had been a steamy, showery day” (Bowen 1083). Suspense creates the reader’s interested to keep reading. The author leave incomplete information most of the time to create suspense “she picked up the letter, which bore no stamp. But it cannot be important, or they would know…” (Bowen 1084). Also writers use long sentences to give specific details and leave the most shocking part at the end “through the aperture driver and passenger, not six inches between them, remained for an eternity eye to eye. Mrs. Drover’s mouth hung open for some seconds before she could issue her first scream” (Bowen 1089). The author also create situation where the character will be exposure to a dangerous situation. The characters also pass through a lot situations where they will have thoughts that will worry
