What is sustainable about sustainable fishing? There is a very fine line between what is and is not sustainable for large fishery companies. This fine line is leading to climate change, damaged ecosystems, and the endangerment of fish as well as people. If we want to avoid this, new rules and laws about sustainable fishing need to be enforced and it needs to be done fast.

Even with all these rules and regulations it is not always safe for the ocean and fish. Fisheries harvest a specific fish or species in large quantities using a specific method like a variety of nets, traps, hooks, and trawling. Some of these ways are more harmful than others. Many of these methods ruin habitats, kill fish and endanger other species. Ecosystems take hundreds of years to develop to the size they are and things like fishing nets can destroy it all in minutes. Around the world, three billion people rely on catching and eating fish to stay alive (World wildlife). Taking that away would result in economic destruction. Not everyone can go to the store and buy food for their families so they rely on going out and catching fish in the ocean to provide. This can not be taken away from people's everyday lives, it just needs to be done in a safe way. Commercial fishing can help fish populations if done correctly. Without fishing, populations can grow to unhealthy numbers. This results in an imbalance and will erode the food chain which can damage other species like sea turtles and coral (World wildlife). Having healthy, balanced ecosystems are important for our oceans.

Illegal fishing activities can be changed and even stopped. Many people do not know what goes on behind the fishing scenes. More awareness needs to be spread about these poor effects on the environment. The rules and laws need to be stricter and buyers need to stop supporting them. Eating local seafood is a great start, as well as doing your research on where your seafood is really coming from and how it is being caught. Buying from local fisheries are not damaging the seas and oceans nearly as bad or as fast. Consider if your intake of seafood is worth all the ocean
