A visible aspect of the Delta Blues in Rock n Roll is the lyrics and the extent at which artists use them to express deep emotion. The rolling Stones, sang “Paint it black” with the aim of allowing the audience to look into the life of a troubled fellow who wishes his life was all painted black just like his moods. The Alabama shakes, a modern rock band showcase the same emotion when they sing “Bless my heart, bless my soul. I didn’t think I’d make it to 22 years old.” in “Hold on” Similar sadness can be seen in Robert Johnson’s “Come on to my kitchen” who continuously asks his lover to come back to him.
Daniel Decatur Emmett was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio in the fall of 1815. Emmett was a composer who worked as a drummer in a traveling circus, then a minstrel troupe after being discharged from the Army because he falsified his age to enlist. Emmett wrote many of what are now considered to be Confederate anthems, “…much to the chagrin of Emmett who was anything but a Southern sympathizer…” Emmett wrote these songs as walk-arounds, a dance number that was performed at the end of a show that featured the entire company of musicians in the minstrel troupe.
James Monroe Whitfield’s poem, “America,” spoke to me the most compared to the other poems in the selection. In the poem he asks many questions regarding the American Revolution, and the true reasons for America to become free. The line that stuck out to me the most was on lines 17 and 18, “Was it for this they shed their blood, On hill and plain, on field and flood?” Whitfield is trying to make the point in these lines that the American Revolution was fought for freedom for all men and women in America. Many men shed their blood for liberty and they were proud of the outcome.
“Life isn't a Fiddle” “Discussion on the theme - Expecting the Unforeseen” In Spoon River Anthology, written by Edgar Lee Masters, many different themes are explored. Among those, are the ideas of the world not being as it appears, people often sleep with their enemy and life not always being easy. However, one very important idea is stated in the theme of “expect the unforeseen”. This particular theme is made especially clear, illustrated by the poems, “Fiddler Jones”, “Blind Jack” and “Franklin Jones”.
Do you know who Paul Revere is?“Listen my children, and you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere. ”Paul Revere was involved in the Revolutionary War in 1775 and wanted to be free from the British. The Paul Revere’s Ride Poem was very inaccurate and the historical one was acute. According to Paul Revere Ride Poem there are three different characters.
James Weldon Johnson was known mainly for his poetry James John was the first African American in his country. Johnson gave a more in depth view into his life he also focused on African American accomplishment and everything battled through his life he was brought up in a middle class setting. Along this was a way to clear that the autobiography of Ex-Coloured Man was not a record of his life. O black slave singers, gone, forgot, unfamed, You—you alone, of all the long, long line Of those who’ve sung untaught, unknown, unnamed, Have stretched out upward, seeking the divine.
This song is really good!!!!! I like it a lot!” He replied “This is Hank Williams Jr. son.”, and my love only grew from there. I started to explore older country music and the history around it. I fell in love with two artist in particular.
He worked hard to learn how to write great songs and also how to sing. Young’s music was not only good, but also very impactful. He wrote songs to not only warn, but attack bad things, such as violence, racism and the use of drugs. The song “Southern Man” attacked racism. The song “Southern Man” is about a man with a bunch of black slaves and how the black slaves do not use violence, but instead hold back their frustration and do not go to violence.
Wherever we may come from, we can do amazing things in this world. In this world, every human being can be anything they strive to be. Lupe Fiasco released the inspirational song, “The Show Goes On,” on October 26, 2010, as the first single from his third studio album Lasers. He uses motivational and inspirational phrases to motivate the audience to never give up even if they are going through the hardest parts of their lives. Fiasco uses his past to connect to the targeted audience, that being the less fortunate families and those who grew up in harsh conditions.
These songs offer a distinct perspective on the social and political issues of their time, shedding light on important aspects of American society. " Mississippi Goddam" emerged as a heartfelt response to the racially motivated violence and discrimination faced by black communities in the segregated South. Simone's lyrics, such as "Alabama's got me so upset, Tennessee 's made me lose my rest," passionately convey her frustration and serve as a rallying cry against racial injustices. Similarly, "What's Going On" delves into the complexities of the 1970s, encompassing themes of war, poverty, drug abuse, and racial divisions. Gaye's lyrics invite listeners to contemplate these pressing issues and advocate for unity and understanding.
Mississippi Goddam, written and performed by Artist Nina Simon at Carnegie hall in 1964, in this song was written to honor the civil right activist Medgar Evers who was assassinated on June 12 in Jackson Mississippi. Nina Simon used her talent and status to protest the mistreatment of Africans Americans in a fearless way. The song starts with “Alabama's gotten me so upset / Tennessee made me lose my rest / and everybody knows about Mississippi Goddam”. I have chosen this song because it was part of the civil right movement, Nina Simon echoed in her song what Dr. Martin Luther king was saying to pressure congress to pass the civil right legislation.
The “Drummer boy of Shiloh” by Ray Bradbury is a short story telling an experience of a Union Drummer Boy. The mood shift of this piece is scared then determined, the tone is serious the whole way through. It was the year 1862, April 6th, Tennessee. The Civil War was in action, Joby, the drummer boy of the Battle of Shiloh witnesses one of the bloodiest wars in the Civil War. However, thanks to the young recruits from Iowa and Illinois the line held.
As the movie goes on, it becomes more and more clear what Tennessee Williams is trying to convey to the audience. This being, Southern culture was deeply corrupted in many ways and the societal norms of the time period were like a drug that people
