The Hallmark film, Sweet Nothing in My Ear, revolves around the difficult decision parents; Dan and Laura face as they decide whether or not their Deaf son, Adam, should receive a cochlear implant that may potentially restore his hearing. Adam’s mother, Laura became Deaf early in her youth; she was raised by well educated Deaf parents with strong roots in Deaf Culture and Community. Adam’s father, Dan, is hearing, and made the decision to learn sign “the first time I saw her” (Laura). Adam became Deaf at age four, his parents were both understanding, and attuned to Deaf Culture. As a result, he was taught to sign by his mother, and his Deafness becomes part of his identity. Disputes between Adam’s parents arise after a trip to the Emergency Room. The doctor urges Dan to look into the option of implanting Adam a cochlear implant; insisting it will open the door to more opportunities for Adam’s future. Dan goes on to consider this option for Adam, believing it will improve his son’s quality of life. While Adam’s mother, Laura, who is from a strong Deaf background is firmly against it. When the idea of having a hearing son is established in his mind, his entire view point of what it means to be Deaf shifts, as he takes on a completely perspective on the subject. In short, Dan is becomes convinced Adam will never reach his full potential because he is Deaf, and it is his duty as a father to ensure his son will not miss opportunities. His stance on the subject of cochlear implants is influenced by his background and mindset of a hearing person, as a result, Dan believes Adam will be better off
