Music in the 1930s The entertainment people had in the 1930s involved plenty of ideas, mainly reflecting music with the likes of swing music, kinds of artists, and the makeup of the radio and how it evolved music over time. People needed some joy and happiness in life, the main purpose being that the Great Depression hit around that time and people were losing hope. When music became a huge hit then, it changed everyone's lives forever. Swing music began as one of the most popular genres of music that had an enormous impact on the people in the 1930s and helped people be able to express themselves through the hard times going on. Billie Holiday was one of the first black females to be hired to tour around the South, along with a white swing band when she joined Artie Shaw and his orchestra in 1938. The name “Crooners” became popular in the 1930s. Bing Crosby was also considered a crooner, but wasn’t necessarily the teen type idol, but became one of the first multi-media stars. He was on top of the charts in best selling musicians and also obtained recordings with popular orchestras and found success with going solo and running a weekly radio show. His music, along with his voice quickly spread and made so many people want to listen to his music, which had a bass-baritone kind of voice. He started appearing in movies and short films, doing so helped launch his career more efficiently (Person, Steve). These music artists also bought millions of records and gave other musicians the opportunity to have massive commercial clout to extend their popularity (Young).
