Fox in the Snow is a local bakery, coffee shop located in downtown Columbus. There are two locations, one in German Village, the other is located in Italian Village. The major parties that are invested in the firm’s success are, baristas, bakers, managers, and the owners. Additionally, coffee growers, roasters, and suppliers of the ingredients for the bakery are all impacted.
The Competitive Environment The business is operating in a saturated market for local and international competitors. The largest and most obvious competitor is Starbucks. Gourmet coffee is a luxury that consumers are less likely to purchase in an economy with high unemployment and low disposable income. According to a 2018 article from CNBC, overall unemployment is at 4.1 percent (Moyer). Another article from Bloomberg published in December of 2017 reports that consumer spending rose more than forecasted (Chandra). Both of these would seems to indicate that, in general, consumers have more disposable income.
The Social Environment According to an article from The Washington Post in 2017, millennials consume 44 percent of coffee in the United States. (Heath) The article cites Gabrielle Bosche who says, “Coffee has everything millennials love: status, experience and personalization.” Starbucks has become a globally identifiable brand, and gourmet coffee has become a status symbol. Fox in the Snow is capitalizing on this by selling items like t-shits, pins, and other items with their logo.
