Analyze, interpret, draw conclusions, and question literary devices in a given piece of fiction or non-fiction literature. 3. Gather and organize information to support a thesis and produce a documented research paper according to MLA in-text citation method. 4. Write a variety of essays with an introduction, thesis, body with major points supported by examples, transitions, and a conclusion. 5. Make presentations for various purposes. 6. Course Description: This course is required of all 10th grade students and is one of the four credits of English required to graduate. Reading will center around a variety of authors and genres. Students may expect to study any or all of the following works: various pieces of fiction and non-fiction, Julius Caesar and Lord of the Flies. Additional pieces of literature may be added at the teacher’s discretion. Through this study, students will gain an understanding of how all literature relates to modern audiences. In addition to the reading, students will explore a variety of writing styles by writing various types of essays (narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and expository). They will be introduced to the research process and will be required to write a short biographical research paper on a topic of their choice that conforms to MLA in-text documentation format. At the end of the course, students will take the State of Missouri End-of-Course exam, which will be 10% of the 2nd semester grade. MAKE-UP WORK IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY. Students who are absent must ask for make-up work immediately upon their return to class. This must be done the same day, either before/after school or before/after class. Once class has begun, under no circumstances should the student interrupt to ask for make-up work. Students who ask for make-up work will have as many days as they were absent to complete the work and turn it in for a grade. This includes assignments, quizzes, and tests. Failure to complete make-up work within the time allotted will result in a zero, and those points cannot be made up. If you are absent on a day an assignment is due, you must turn that work in on the day you return to
