Both functionalism and symbolic interactionism are sociological theories sets of ideas which provide an explanation for human society. Emile Durkheim from the structural-functionalist approach to deviance is that since deviance is found in every form of society it must have a purpose. He views are that deviance serves 4 functions in particular. Durkheim claimed that “Deviance helps define cultural values and norms” this statement clearly demonstrates the function of which deviance is important for a society structurally. Showcasing as a society we can only understand what is good by also understanding what is not good. “Society's response to deviance clarifies moral boundaries” this means when society reacts to deviance its drawing line, showing that when a behavior crosses the line they can be sanctioned either formally or informally. Durkheim also stated “these reactions bring society together” by reacting in similar ways is affirming to one another that we are ‘us’ and the deviances are ‘them’ concept creating a
