Symbolic Interactionist Perspective

We as a people have been conditioned to live part of our live inside of our many screens. This has not always been the case but with this development it open many avenues of study. If I were to study this phenomena and the communication that is fostered within it from the Symbolic Interactionist perspective I would look at individuals profiles likes of a subset of social media users. This would allow for an insight to the different information that one chooses to provide to the outside world. To make the most of this information I would choose participants who have more than one social media outlet to to cross compare the information from other sites to show how different facets of said life interest to create one persona. Hypothetically, with the use of emails, messages and profiles we would have an insight into how we as a group or collective are changing as well as adapt as a people need to adapt to make the best and realize the worst of the situation that we have created. Speaking from a social interactionist perspective the use of the many avenues of communication that are used on social media sites a researcher would be able to decided and study on a personal level the effect of weather or not the professional world of email is at all impacted by the social language of the SMS messages speaks to the individual encounters. Furthermore this can be seen when we as a people assign more or less respect and validity to certain sites. For example, we respect eharmony as a dating site and therefore people speak highly of them and not not throw shame on users whereas a person who uses the tinder who finds a relationship may be shamed because of the sight that is used. This same behavior is found when people interact with one another and tell others if there met or are meeting their significant other in a bar (Tinder) for a one night stand or in the office (Match) as a long lasting relationship. In terms of intersectionality, this scenario would be best applied if you were to look at people with both a Tinder and Match account and see how both persona are reflected in their persona. Consequently, it is only natural that the internet and its many facets take away from traditional communications as well. This can be seen with the use of emoticons. To look further this is often illustrated in the constant addition of more “emojis”. At first these were used as an addition to communication as pictures images as time went on however people started to replace certain idioms. For example the first well known emoji was the smiley face. This was at first used by many in addition to a positive post or message to convey emotion of happiness and the same goes for the frowny
