Some people in this world can hold a grudge or be mad at somebody for what seem like forever. In the short story The Interlopers by Saki, he uses the theme, if you are distracted by the little things in then you will never accomplish anything. The theme of the The Interlopers is shown through the troubled conflict, the symbolism and the irony. The conflict helps to show the true meaning of the theme. At the beginning of the story, when the setting and and the characters are introduced, the reader gets an insight on the troubled past that has brought this conflict into the present. “A famous lawsuit in the days of his grandfather. The neighboring feud had grown into a personal one, since Ulrich became head of his family” (Saki 1). This quote shows that Georg and Ulrich have a feud that has carried on for a few too many years. This connects the the theme because based on the quote that’s these two characters have been worried about their whole life, which means they probably haven’t done anything else, therefore nothing has been accomplished. After the enemies meet in the forest and contemplate whether or not they should kill each other, a storm sends a tree branch to the ground. Saki writes, “ a fierce shriek of a storm had been answered by a splitting crash over their head.” He also writes “Ulrich found himself stretched on the ground. One arm helplessly in a tight tangle of forked branches” (1). According to the quote, symbolically, it means that the feud has been going on for so long that it ha stretched everybody out and they are willing to do anything to end it. For the connection to the theme this shows that the characters have been planning to end this feud for so long that they haven’t thought about anything else.
