Authors are known to use a multitudinous amount of literary devices in their works of literature. Literary devices are used to deliver a deeper meaning than what is shown on the page. One of the most common literary devices used by authors is symbolism. Symbolism is the use of symbols such as an object, person, or action to portray different meanings. In Robert Lipsyte’s book, The Contender, some of the symbols he uses to show the theme is the movies, the cave, and the stairs.
No generations will suffer like them. The older generation will just go back to old occupation. The future generation will simply disregard them as a whole.[7] The choices left for the suffering generation of this great war is, as they grow older, “few will adapt themselves, some others will merely submit, and most will be bewildered; - the years will pass by and in the end we (they) shall fall into ruin’’[8]The significance of that message, given by the main character, was the warning the author tried to proclaim. The German generation of young men of late teens and early twenties, will grow up with only knowing war.
“European nations began world war 1 with a glamorous vision of war, only to be psychologically shattered by the realities of the trenches, the experience changed the way people referred to the glamour of battle , they treated it no longer as a positive quality but a dangerous illusion.” (Virginia Postrel) Many soldiers did not expect WW1 to be as gruesome as it was. “The War To End All Wars” changed the way people looked at war not just soldiers but the families and friends at home.
The motif that I chose from the book Night, by Elie Wiesel is “night”. This motif represents both physical and spiritual death, but it also represents death and despair. When Elie uses this word, it symbolizes when something in his life simply goes away, or when he enters a phase of darkness. For example, when Elie states, “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed”, he is saying that the night that he entered the concentration camp, it of course changed his life forever, but it also was the night that he stopped trusting in God so much because he didn’t understand how God could be doing such horrible things to such innocent people. Now
In brief, this story is labeled “night”, the author is Elie Wiesel. The tone of this story is intimate, and affectionate, it characterizes the extraordinary painful and personal experience of a single victim. The setting first takes place in Sighet, Transylvania, and then Elie is transported to several concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Gleiwitz; he spends the time there in the years 1941-1945, during World War II. Eliezer struggled to maintain faith in a caring God; Silence; Inhumanity to other humans. The first symbolism is fire; Madame Schachter foreshadows death and horror “look, look at it, fire, a terrible fire, mercy, oh that fire”.
Throughout the ages, wars have wreaked havoc and caused great destruction that lead to the loss of millions of lives. However, wars also have an immensely destructive effect on the individual soldier. In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque, one is able to see exactly to what extent soldiers suffered during World War 1 as well as the effect that war had on them. In this essay I will explain the effect that war has on young soldiers by referring to the loss of innocence of young soldiers, the disillusionment of the soldiers and the debasement of soldiers to animalistic men. Many soldiers entered World War 1 as innocent young boys, but as they experienced the full effect of the war they consequently lost their innocence.
Emotional imagery played a prominent role in the novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns" in a variety of different ways. This allows Hosseini to construct a more affectionate connection with his readers and connect more genuinely with their feelings. This is showcased in several parts of the novel, specifically on the occasion where Nana committed suicide and Mariam felt as if she has no one to go when she was in need of consoling. The guilt that Mariam felt is easily expressed through the novel and can be detected by the reader. A similar case can be assumed for the death of Laila’s family after her house was bombed.
When we read, we want to truly enjoy what is written we need to become a part of the story. And literary devices help us to better see and feel the storyline. A good storyline captures all of our senses, these devices draw the reader in, paint a picture, heighten the senses, and pull at us emotionally. Throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story The Birthmark, some of the key literary devices used were irony symbol and theme.
A red rose has become a symbol for romance. Skulls a symbol of death. Four-leafed clovers have come to represent goodluck due to their rarity. Symbols are all over the place and have been for a long time, they are so ingrained within our everyday life that we miss a majority of them. They’re present in ads, on tv, even on the doors to the toilet.
Hakim Laila’s feminist identity was influenced by her father, Hakim. Hakim is mostly referred to as Babi in the novel. Babi was a high school teacher, in other word, an intellectual. Intelligence is devalued by the majority in their society, therefore being a teacher makes Babi an extraordinary person in the novel. Since Fariba, Laila’s mother, was distanced from her, Laila had a special bond with her father.
In All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque exposes the reality of war by refuting the idea of the “Iron Youth,” revealing the mistreatment of soldiers, and showing the critical effects war imprints on them. When any war begins, young men are always the first ones to be sent into the war zones. To clarify, older generations believe young adults are the best options for fighting; these boys are strong, full of energy, and do not have anything to lose. “The chief source of this pro-war ideology were the older men of the nation: professors, publicists, politicians, and even pastors” (Literature and Its Times).
“A Tree of Night” is a mysterious and dark short story written by Truman Capote. Set on a train ride in winter, the story follows a young college sophomore student, Kat, who is returning home after her uncle’s funeral. The theme is dark and mysterious with characters who disturb the main character. The eerie atmosphere is portrayed through descriptive imagery such as “The coach was a relic with a decaying interior of ancient red-plush seats, bald in spots, and peeling iodine-colored woodwork. An old-time copper lamp, attached to the ceiling, looked romantic and out of place.
Kate Chopin's The Awakening is a novel full of symbolism; even down to the title. By giving this novel the title, it is great symbolism of what the story will be about. The title gives a vague mental picture for you that cannot be fully understood until the reader has finished reading. It is also full of other symbolisms, such as clothes, houses, birds, swims, and the ocean. All of these elements are powerful and add great meaning to the characters and the novel itself.
