“ The Tell-Tale Heart” Interpretive Essay Is the complex character created by Edgar Allan Poe a calculated killer or a delusional madman. In the short story “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, the main character has a mental condition which causes him to kill a neighbor. He believes that his neighbor has a “vulture eye” which is the reason why he killed him. Night after night, he watches the man and plans how to kill him. Then one night, he puts his plan into action.

This is the issue that the main character faces in The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe. In the story the main character wants to get rid of an ugly eye that gives him negative vibes. However he can't do it because the man with the eye stays awake most of the night. The main character has to be quiet and when he kills the old man and puts his body under the floor, but soon after the police arrived at his house because there was a complaint about a yell from the neighbors.

Poe’s diction heightens the arrogant tones which is seen as the man plans the murder and carries it out in a careful, organized way. He goes “boldly” into the chamber, “cunningly” sticks his head in the doorway and feels “the extent of his own power”. Poe’s use of diction shows how cocky the man actually is.
The most important symbol is the heart which was illustrated by the conscious of the narrator. The second most important symbol was the evil eye or also known as the vulture eye that the narrator despises because it represented a different outlooks on the world. The last most important symbol was the watch that symbolized the time until the death of the old man. How someone deals with a situation all depends on how they looks at it. Some people can tell the difference between right or wrong and act upon it; while others don’t know how to do the right thing.

As some may know, not being able to see what is heard in the night may lead to an over exaggeration what may be causing it. Thus, causing suspense and a connection between them and the story, as many fear the unknown. Next, the descriptions used to describe the old man’s eye were extremely unsettling. The eye was said to “represent that of a vulture, a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever I fell upon it my blood ran cold” (Poe 303).
In my opinion, YES! We see the narrator’s faulty character, but we also know how he feels about that own character! We also follow through on the remorse and anger that a third person narrator could never give us such a vivid description of. And Poe's use of dramatic irony AND a first person point of view makes the twist at the end's intriguing nature tenfold the shock compared to what it could have been. Using first person was also an interesting move because when somebody reads, they often feel more empathy for the character explaining themselves but then how can you empathize for someone who can't even empathize for their self in this case?

When the narrator 's plan didn 't go as he wanted it to, he revoltingly crushed the old man, whose heart was vigorously pounding with fear, with a bed until he couldn 't breathe. The dreadful pounding of the heart later appeared in the narrator 's thoughts as a form of guilt, which forced him to go psychotic. The overall mood determined by the text, darkness and madness, was influenced by several elements to help further advance it.
Many could read this story and think that Edgar Allen Poe was some psychotic person who loves coming up with ways to kill people or others could think that he just likes to write stories that are haunting and give us goosebumps. However, in my opinion, I believe that “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe has a lot more to do with symbolism and theme than how the reader feels. Starting the story we see that the narrator keeps trying to convince us that he has no mental problem or issue. In fact that this “problem” has made his senses stronger and sharper. We then learn that he has a problem with this mans vulture eye and wants to murder him because of it.
Committing murder sometimes seems like the most logical thing to do. Maybe something, such as a physical deficiency, can annoy a person so much that it drive them to the person insane to the point he or she commits murder. This is the case in Edgar Allen Poe's short story “ The Tell-Tale Heart.” The narrator, who is unknown, explains to the audience how something as simple as a physical deficiency drive him to commit murder. The narrator's emotional state throughout the story is quite interesting.
