Ghost boys Author's craft essay

How many black lives have been shot by a police officer in the previous year, 2022? There have been a lot of black lives killed by police officers in the past year, approximately 220 lives have been killed. The critical literacy novel Ghost Boys, by Jewell Parker Rhodes, takes place in Chicago in the front yard of Jerome's house. Jerome Roger is a 12 year old boy that was shot by a police officer for the mistake of having a real gun but in reality he had a toy gun. Symbolism, flashback / flash forward and revealing action are all incorporated in the book ghost boys by Rhodes.
The most influential author's craft moves Jewell Parker Rhodes makes is probably symbolism. It should be noted that the author includes symbolism to show how things may have started and to show us more information about the book. One main symbol in the book is the toy gun. This is an important symbol because this is what caused Jerome's death. The police officer thought that Jerome had a real gun but instead he had a toy gun. On page 5 it says “Jerome Rogers, 12, was shot in an abandoned green …show more content…

One example from the book is Carlos pulling out a gun to protect Jerome and himself. On page 44 it says “Carlos has a gun.” This is a revealing action because this is a serious action and this is a big part of the book. If he had not done this himself, Jerome would have gotten beaten up, and Jerome would probably not have gotten it afterwards. Another example, in the book that shows revealing action was when Jerome got shot. On page 3 “pow pow… I fell flat hard.” If this were not to happen none of this book would have been possible, but it did happen and it was a considerable part in the story; it reveals a lot of action. Therefore, revealing action is a major part of this story because if we did not know what actually happened, we would not understand the story at all and it would not be
