In doing this he thought Christmas would not come and all of the Whos would be upset. This, however, is disproved by the singing in Christmas spirit that the Whos performed. Perplexing the Grinch, “he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore… “Maybe Christmas… doesn’t come from a store… perhaps… (Christmas) means a little bit more!””(39). This revelation alters the Grinch’s perception of Christmas vastly. By allowing himself to make an effort to understand Christmas he embraced the Who culture.
When the anticipated senior year finally begins, a typical student at Laurel High School enjoys a brief honeymoon of peer dominance and the illusion that the finish line is in sight. Then, reality sets in. College and scholarship applications burden an already hefty load of work so that by December, much like poor little Max the dog in Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch, seniors feel they are dragging forty times their weight up a steep, snowy mountain. I saw an opportunity several years ago to take advantage of their misery by assigning a document I knew most would need to write anyway, the dreaded personal essay. It makes perfect sense: it fits the Common Core standards, and they need the help.
An American poet once stated, “Great literature is simply language charged with meaning to the utmost possible degree” (Pound). Every piece of literature has an impactful underlying meaning and can be interpreted into universal symbols, motifs, and patterns. Archetypal Criticism is a theory based off common myths, images, and symbols in literature. The definition of an archetypal can be defined as a very typical example of a certain person or thing (Davidson). With that being said, readers can apply Archetypal Criticism to In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez.
The collective greed of mankind has resulted in a planet where our resources are being used up at an alarming rate. Greedy people are often looked at like selfish and ignorant human beings. Ebenezer Scrooge is like that, but there was a time that he wasn’t. Ebenezer is a rich businessman who despises the poor. Scrooge didn’t believe in the Christmas Spirit, all he thought was that Christmas was just of load of humbug!(Dickens, 6)
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, shows how a greedy man turns from his life of cold-heartedness. He begins to change, however, when he is visited by his dead partner Jacob Marley. Marley warns Scrooge that three other Spirits will be visiting him throughout the night, and will help convince him to change his ways.

In ‘A Christmas Carol’, Dickens presents Ignorance and Want in a metaphorical fashion, depicting them as children. This is done in such a manner as to shock and appall the reader, leading to greater emotional investment. Throughout the extract’s entirety, Ignorance and Want are depicted as children, increasing the atmosphere of pessimism that surrounds them. Dickens describes the manner in which the Ghost of Christmas Present “brought two children” – by describing Ignorance and Want as “children”, Dickens creates the impression of innocence, vulnerability, and weakness.
“Change is inevitable but growth optional,” is a quote from John Maxwell about how over time everyone changes although growth from old ways is only a conscious decision. I connect this quote to The Christmas carol by Charles Dickens, specifically the character Scrooge due to his change throughout this story. In the story, The Christmas carol Scroogeembarks on a journey with four ghosts: Marley, Past, Present, and Future. They teach ScroogeLessons about his personality and how he needs to be much less greedy and prideful and general improvement to himself as a person. Future’s ghost pushed him the most, making him the superior spirit.
“Christmas is a necessity. There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we’re here for something else besides ourselves.” this is the quote Eric Sevareid said and what Scrooge will start believing once he is visited by the three spirits which allow him to start bringing kindness, joy, warmth and much more into his life besides money. In A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge is a miser who learns the true meaning of Christmas when three spirits visit him on the night of Christmas Eve. Scrooge later learns to be a joyful person on Christmas after the wonderful little visits he gets by these three spirits.
“Change your thoughts, and you change your world” was once said by Norman Vincent Peale, an American minister who focused towards ‘positive thinking’. The quote itself says that if you make certain decisions, then everything around you could change. This is significant to Ebenezer Scrooge in the play, A Christmas Carol. Ebenezer Scrooge, in the beginning, Scrooge was an elderly, rude, and greedy man with a love for large amounts of money who cares about nothing but himself. For example, a kind gentleman asks Scrooge to donate money and help the poor.

Each ghost makes an impact on him in several ways. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge influential scenes from his younger days.
The Grinch Who Stole Christmas The Grinch who stole Christmas is one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books and one of my favorite Christmas movies. I found 3 things similar to one another in the book and the movie which had the Grinch who hated Christmas, the Who’s who loved Christmas, and the Grinch stole all of the presents and food. One identical thing I found in the movie and book was that the Grinch hated Christmas. If they didn’t put the Grinch’s hate for Christmas in both the book and, he would have no reason to steal Christmas and it wouldn’t have been a very good movie.
In A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens utilizes a plethora of literary devices such as similes, metaphors, imagery, and denouement to explore the capacity for change. This reveals that changing is never impossible until you’re six-feet under. A simile is a comparison that usually uses the word “like” or “as”. Dickens’ use of similes demonstrates how Scrooge changes throughout the story and because of this, we see how changing all aspects of yourself isn’t impossible. “Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self- contained, and solitary as an oyster.”
