The writer Grant Morrison once said, “Truth speaks best in the language of poetry and symbolism, I think.” Indeed readers can find the honestness of this statement in the It Ends With Us Series. Truth speaks best in symbolism because Without symbolism you would know the real meaning of objects in movies, books, or even in life. It Ends With Us Series Lilly and Atlas’ relationship towards each other grows from when they were teenagers, through Lilly’s matrimony, and after divorce. In the journals, Lilly wrote that she and Atlas had a formidable life growing up with abusive families, so they started to bond and took care of each other. When Lily was a teenager she met Atlas, he was living in this deserted house behind Lilly’s home. When Lily found out he was staying there she started to take care of him, even when he was sick. Everyday she would start writing to Ellen DeGeneres in a journal about her day with and without Atlas when they were teenagers. Such as Lilly tells the reader, “ Dear Ellen, … I had given Atlas a change of clothes and knew he not only needed to be out of the house when my parents got home, but he needed to be far away from our house. … How does a guy humble, well mannered, and using words like disparaging end up homeless? How does any teenager end up homeless? I need to find out, Ellen. I’m going to find out what happened to him. You just wait and see.--- Lilly ( Colleen Hoover It Ends With Us page 36-38). Years after Atlas left Lilly she stopped writing in the journals after her teenage years. She had stopped writing because she moved on, and had moved to Boston. When Lilly had run into Atlas one day she was astounded because she thought she would never see him again. After Lily and Ryle get a divorce, months later Atlas and Lilly go on a date. She gives Atlas a journal to read because she pledged to him she would. The cards weren’t dealt in their favor and that's okay. Whenever they were upset or scared they would tell each other, “Just keep swimming” because even when things were tough you just had to get through them. This quote from Finding Nemo helped strengthen their love and bond to show each other that they are there for each other. Even though Lilly doesn’t like cartoons she loved Finding Nemo, she found that quote soothing and helpful through her abusive relationship with her father. Lilly tells the reader, “Just keep swimming. Recognize that quote, Ellen? It's what Dory says to Marlin in Finding Nemo. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming, swimming. After today I think that's my favorite cartoon. Because I've been feeling like drowning lately, and sometimes people need a reminder that they just need to keep swimming” (Colleen Hoover It Ends With Us page 138). Now that Atlas has read the journals he watched Finding Nemo so understands why Lilly loves this movie. Since Atlas and Lilly have had a more flirtatious relationship and have been dating for a while, Atlas asks Lily to move in and soon enough it’s their wedding day! They don’t have to keep swimming, they finally have a place to settle, and not fret anymore about the past or future. After Atlas tells the readers his vows he adds a line to the end: “P.S. I wish for you to be my fish''
