Everyone matures in their lifetime because of one occurrence or event. A Separate Peace by John Knowles is a bildungsroman. A bildungsroman is a novel about the protagonist learning a life lesson or maturing in some aspect. Throughout the story, growth and maturity plays the biggest roll on Finny, Gene, and Leper. Finny matures into reality of the war throughout A Separate Peace.
The boys in the Butt Room react to Brinker’s accusation as a joke, and playfully accuse Gene of his attempt to purposely hurt Finny and knock him out of the tree. The boys start to question gene of what happened during the time of the fall, and if he was the one who purposely caused Finny to lose his balance. The reason Gene is to play along and make up a story about his attempt to murder Finny was to hide the truth of his actions and to keep them from finding out “ Oh, you know about the tree, I tried to let my face fall guilty, but I felt instead as though it were being dragged toward. Yes, huh, yes there was a small, a little contretemps at the tree” (Knowles 90).
The feeling of neglect, presses like a dagger to Leper. He wishes for people to notice him and appreciate him. Moreover he wants to be closer to Gene and be his best friend. However, Finny is Gene’s best friend, and so he harbors an ounce of envy towards Finny. All the while, he joins the army, yet it cuts a deep wound into him, and he loses his mind, and so he escapes.
The author, John Knowles, in the novel, “A Separate Peace”, conveys the lesson of friendship, or rather the lack of, with his use of diction. The strategy in which the author phrased certain sections of dialogue between Finny and Gene is there to show that Finny cares for Gene despite Gene’s obvious discontent. The friendship is a one-way street, and the author uses diction to represent this unbalance in the relationship, leading to friendship being a key theme throughout the book. There exist many examples of this diction throughout the novel, one of these is during their illegal beach trip. “I hope you’re having a pretty good time here.
Antisthenes once said: “As iron is eaten away by rust, so the envious are consumed by their own passion.” This quote directly relates to how in the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, in which the main character, Gene, experiences jealousy and paranoia. These emotions cause him to create an enemy out of his friend, Finny. The effect of his emotions is that Finny is hurt and crippled for life. The jealousy consumes him just as rust consumes iron.
John Knowles, author of A Separate Peace, uses both character development and setting to support his decision in selecting the title. He uses the main characters of Gene and Phineas (Finny) and their troubled yet deeply bonded friendship as a way to illustrate the separate peace that takes place both within the boys themselves and in the friendship that is built between the two. Knowles also uses the setting of the novel to demonstrate the vast difference between the peaceful Devon School grounds and the war raging outside of the school’s walls. The title, A Separate Peace, as chosen by the author is symbolic of the main characters, Finny and Gene’s, struggle to find peace within themselves and with each other while set in a place that significantly contrasts the events of the real world.
In John Knowles A Separate Peace he writes about the transition from childhood to adolescence. In this coming of age novel taking place in the 1950’s two teenage boys Finny and Gene form a relationship based on fear and adventure. The two opposite teens, finny a outgoing basically perfect teen and gene being a lesser perfect balances out the relationship between the two. The fact that they are somewhat minor opposites aren’t the only thing that brings the two together. Finny’s fear of anything bad or evil and gene’s fear of hitting rock bottom forms a relationship between the two teens which sets the stage for us all.

Each nation involved struggled and fought their hardest in order to satisfy the good of their nation. Not only is the setting in the story taking place during this time of quarrel, the story also demonstrates areas of self-conflict and an internal battle throughout. The characters in “A Separate Peace”, are described as experiencing this self-conflicting, internal battle. Gene (also the narrator) is specifically depicted as he goes through his battle in life.
In John Knowles, fictional story A Separate Peace he uses internal conflict to give the reader insight on the narrator’s feeling of lack of self-confidence. After Finny’s accident, Gene decided that he wanted to be the assistant senior crew manager of the crew team. Quackenbush, the head crew manager, questioned Gene as to why he suddenly wanted to assistant manage the crew team, “Starting a little late to manage teams aren’t you?” “Am I?” (78) Gene is a pretty good athlete, but suddenly he doesn’t think that he’s good enough to play sports.
A Separate Peace is a coming of age novel written by John Knowles. Throughout the novel the Apollonian and Dionysian sides of man are constantly at battle. The Apollonian side is based on reason, logic and order whereas the Dionysian side is based on nature and chaos and appeals to the emotions and instincts. In Chapter 11 the Dionysian and Apollonian sides of man are illustrated through an interaction between Finny, Gene, and Brinker: Brinker and three cohorts came with much commotion into Finny and Gene’s room at 10:05 p.m. that night:

John Knowles wrote a novel called A Separate Peace that takes place in New Hampshire. Gene, the narrator of A Separate Peace, is a conformist, genius, but envious southern boy that plays an important part in this novel. A Separate Peace depicts how Gene’s envy and imitation of Finny affect him, his relationship with Finny, and his achievement of peace.
Good and Evil are cosmic forces at play in everything that occurs in life. In the novel A Separate Peace the main character, Gene, can be seen as evil. Gene's best friend Finny on the other hand can be seen as the 'good guy'. Throughout the novel there are many struggles between good and evil, both big and small. The three largest jabs are most definitely when Gene, without reason, starts thinking Finny is out to get him, another is obviously Gene jousting the branch Finny was on to make him fall, lastly when Gene is hiding by the doctor's window to hear what happened to Finny, and incredulously enough he starts to laugh uncontrollably.

Hester can be viewed as a strong woman if you view her through a progressive lens and see her actions as those of a rebellion instead of adherence.
