John Steinbeck portrays symbolism within each page of this adventure. Pieces from Steinbeck’s writing can be traced back to earlier in the book; the novelist uses foreshadowing as a constructor of suspense. “…the narrow pool…the deep green of the pool…”(Steinbeck, 1 and 99). This citation signifies the start and conclusion of the book, by describing the setting, the writer can take something familiar, and bring that scripture back to life later in the story. In like matter to foreshadowing, comparison takes hold within the paperback. “A shot sounded in the distance.”(Steinbeck, 49).
