In the pursuit of a Great Perhaps, Miles “Pudge” Halter, is constantly unsatisfied by his current state of being, and by finding a “Great Perhaps” gives him a chance to change everything. Miles “Pudge” Halter is the new student at Culver Creek Preparatory School in Birmingham, Alabama. With his history of being the unpopular kid implanted in the back of his mind, he is taken aback by the curiosity of his new roommate Chip “The Colonel” Martin, who is a self proclaimed prodigy, as he is a strong-willed genius. “Pudge” is able to connect with “The Colonel’s” friends, including the mysterious Alaska Young who has a fixation for getting herself and others in trouble. “Pudge” is on a expedition to locate a “Great perhaps”, as he was raised to believe that such seventh heaven exists. …show more content…

She explains to “Pudge” how she has spent most of her life“thinking about how [to] escape [the labyrinth] one day.”( 54) Therefore, this becomes the theme as they both try to escape at the same time, trying to find what a “Great Perhaps” means for each of them. After Alaska's death, “Pudge” is desperate to find the “Great Perhaps” as he wishes to find his way back to her. “Pudge” inquires the opinion of “The Colonel” and the rest of his friends, “but ultimately [he] [does not] believe that [Alaska]...had to be recycled.”(22)Furthermore, after Alaska's death, “Pudge” must find his own way through life because Alaska transforms the way he views the world. This defines how “Pudge” becomes an independent character, as before Alaska, he was unpopular with a constant search for a “Great Perhaps” which “Pudge”would have never known without Alaska.
